AirAsia X

Apparently there was an AU/US Air Force base 25 min away but they went 90 min to Perth...

"Land as soon as possible"... Meh

Sheesh. I almost think this might be how they are actually trained. They have had a number of problems that stem from inadequate training. All happening in a very short time frame. They had an A320 a few years ago fly into a massive thunderstorm.

If the vibration was coming from the engine, do the engine's shear bolts fail before something important on the airframe, like the wing spar, does?

Short answer, yes. If it's shaking bad enough to take out the wing or burning hard enough to fail the wing it should fall off before that happens. Different scenario, but flutter scares me a lot more.....

That was the Hawker AD from the winglet retrofit?

Reason for prayer

"Welp, obviously there is an issue with one of the engines that's shaking the crap out of the jet, but otherwise we're flying like normal and on our way back to the airport have you on the ground in 10 minutes". I feel like asking pax to pray, regardless of your faith/culture, does not instill any confidence in the skipper, but is an effective way to make people think they could die.

Wrong airline, that's Aeromexico.

Apparently I made a bad joke.

My understanding is that they shut it down but the engine was either a) windmilling or b) had structural damage outside the core that was vibrating in the airflow.

The part that I did find interesting is that the captain asked the passengers to pray. Twice.
What if their prayers is what got them on the ground safely!? You can't prove it didn't[emoji39]
