Cooking on the Flightdeck

I gotta say, this one cracked me up. Our system chief just sent an email to the pilots telling us that although it isn't expressly prohibited in the FOM, we cannot cook in the flight deck. Yep. We had at least one pilot who brought a portable oven on board to cook his meals in flight.

Anyone else ever heard of doing this?

I'm not that good. A lot of the day trip guys I've flown with have that portable oven thing. Works good, lasts long time. I actually applaud them for their genius. There is a growing trend but not to the point of rolling in a cuisinart. I'll put it this way, the guys who roll in and use every flat surface not bolted down to build a meal annoy me more than the guy who eats a warmed up leftover.

Yeah, I'm no fan of making the cockpit a cooking studio either. I just like the mental image of a guy with a Foreman grill cooking up a burger. Makes me laugh at a time when laughter is sometimes hard to come by.

The first time some guy had one I thought I was going crazy. This smell started getting better and better. Finally said something and this guy just grinned from ear to ear and said you're welcome. Takes about 2 hours for a good heat but I think it tops out at 150 degrees, pulls very few amps and collapses into nothing. If this memo turns into a revisit of the refrigerator that becomes part of the extended center consol I'm not going to be happy.

I have one. It's nice to be able to heat up chili or soup in the winter. The "oven" (it's really just a hot plate in an insulated bag) draws fewer amps than the iPad charger my knee-level 110V outlet is supposed to be powering. They're pretty common at my place. No ovens, no crew meals, I'm not eating Pringles and beef jerky for 4 days.

I stick potatoes on the exhaust ductwork. Big ones require 2.5 hours but the little salt taters only take 45 minutes or so. The hard part is getting them out without crew or pax seeing you. Getting caught with a stick of butter however was embarrassing.

I've reheated both on the vent next to my bag on a cold CMX mornings and done the engine cooking on the forward glass. We won't talk about the coffee burner trick.
