Australian childrens’ book author Mem Fox has suggested she might never to return to the US after she was detained and insulted by border control agents at Los Angeles airport.

Fox, who is famous worldwide for her best-selling books including Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes and Possum Magic, was en route to a conference in Milwaukee earlier this month when she was stopped...

Unfortunate.

Though, going through LAX without being detained would make me not want return to the US.

Ahh, the older JFK customs was worse.

We didn't have immigration forms for all the passengers leaving some European country and since it was causing a delay in JFK, the flight crew customs agent decided to send our entire crew to the back of the line in order to prove a point to my employer to have more forms at the departure station.

We got held up for 30 minutes and the agent admittedly said "Yeah, it's petty, and it's a lesson for you guys to take it seriously".

I had enough and said, "Hey, it's not part of my job scope to inquire about the number of forms onboard"

"So? You're going to wait an hour"

"Am I being detained?"

"No"

"Either process my form or let me speak to your supervisor"

"Nope"

"I am being detained, I would like to know what charges I am being detained on"

"Fine. Come forward"

I have no quarrel with them but I'm not a pawn.

And dinguses like that are the first thing that visitors see when coming to America.

To be entirely accurate, the thread title is wrong. Neither USBP nor ICE are the customs personnel at the airports. The customs personnel in the blue uniforms that do Port of Entry work are OFO (Office of Field Operations) officers. ICE is the investigative arm and removal operations arm, and BP is the patrol arm in the field. While BP may be seen at airports that are within their areas of operation, they aren't the customs personnel for the actual port. All of these agencies come under DHS and have similar end-state missions, but where their responsibilities lay in that equation, is different.

But I thought there was no Muslim ban?

If there is, I nor any of my collegues have received an email reflecting said ban, nor has anything come out from on high in briefings to that effect or implementation directives. So, the answer would be no to that.

I don't know the specifics of the case, and there's likely more to the story. Though generally speaking, it's not unusual at all for anyone to have their general person non-invasively searched or their belongings searched at a border or port, including US citizens. Although every effort is made to expedite US citizens and other authorized entrants and not to inconvenience them unless a need is seen for it. What the need was in this case, I don't know. Be nice to see some background on it or another side of the story.

I find it slightly amusing you can pay a fairly low fee ($100 over five years) and bypass the screening either via precheck or global entry.

I had my kerfluffle with JFK customs WITH global entry. At the time, we still had to hand the sheet to the crew desk.

But what's hilarious is people without GE were complaining about those WITH GE that were able to bypass the line and for about six months, the agents would have us stand in line anyway so they wouldn't get bitched at.

It's improved since then, but it was such a wretched dog 'n pony show sprinkled in with ego and mini-fiefdoms that it was notoriously terrible. At the time, they were very anti-flight crew but were more than happy to ask one of our LOD's (language of destination flight attendants) for help when "Universal Language" (Crescendoed LOUD Brooklyn-accented English) didn't work.
