fatal KTUS crash

One heck of a rapid post-crash fire it was. Right next to the terminal ramp. 1 confirmed, possible 2 fatal. Light GA of some type.

I just saw a video. Looks like they crashed into a blast fence maybe. Couldn't really make it out.

Ugh. How awful.

Pretty damn traumatic for the pax watching this.

On the recording, sounds like some of the ANG crash trucks got held up on taxiway A waiting to cross RW 21. The chief 2 truck was cleared, but crash 8 got held and had to remind the ground controller that they were still holding and waiting to cross. At least the TAA crash trucks were there quick as their station is on the other side of the cargo ramp from the airline ramp.

I can't imagine sitting in a truck watching people burn all while waiting for a ATC clearance. Mike do you have insight on why ATC doesn't just issue a immediate "all aircraft stop and hold position" and allow CFR to do whatever they want?

I mean everywhere else is always stop and allow for flashing lights to pass, its taught that way to pilots so why do we allow a possible delay from ATC (who could be forgetful due to just watching a plane crash, looking through binoculars, talking to center or etc.

Same thing happened with the FedEx MEM crash, when the additional RMFD CFR trucks were held from crossing a runway because of "traffic on final", when that traffic took 2 or so minutes to arrive and land, more than ample time for the CFR trucks to cross. And the off going ground controller forgot the CFR trucks were holding until the oncoming ground controller asked "do you want to cross those CFR trucks there?", a couple of minutes after the jet that was 2 minutes out on final, had already landed.

Being my backyard here, I have some direct insight to TUS ops. Once upon a time, the chief or lead CFR truck, if there was more than one traveling, could call ground and say, "ground, Chief 2 holding short of 21 at Alfa, request cross 21 with plus 2 crash trucks." So, three vehicles crossing can get one clearance if they're crossing "in formation", so to speak.

Now, TUS requires each CFR vehicle to get a clearance to cross an active runway. I think that occurred following a time where a gaggle of trucks didn't cross expeditiously when cleared to, and ATC has now clamped down on that.

The reasons for holding crash trucks would be for something like traffic on very short final, where sending them around would be unsafe. And ops like that obviously cannot just stop. However that would be a very short delay, and all other traffic would ground stop if they're in the way of responding CFR vehicles. But that's the only time there should be any delay.

Even though TAAs crash trucks were very quickly on scene (TUS has a civilian airport CFR department as well as an ANG USAF fire department on field), but their crash trucks only have 1 crewmember onboard (common, actually) so all they can do is fight fire from in the cab. But in the video, TAAs Engine 761 was also on scene with their crew too. But the ANG CFR trucks aren't in that video because they're waiting to cross 21, like you heard on the LiveATC recording. I'm trying to find out what the actual delay was, and how legit it was, because that truck was holding long enough to have to remind the ground controller that "hey, I'm still waiting to cross here!".

Whether that would've made a difference in this case, who knows, but it should never have to be a problem.

I was looking for any witness statements and all I have found is John Ivanoff, (Chief of Public Safety) who is stating that "The jet hit the ground, skidded and then came to rest."

@MikeD Have you heard anything yet?

RIP.
This is the second time I've had a King Air crash while training at FSI. If it happens again, it's a trend and I'm going to to CAE... and buying lottery tickets. Weird day at Tucson. Active shooter at the AFB. Crash. Jets scrambled to intercept and escort an airliner with a frisky passenger aboard. Yikes.

There was a shooting at Davis Monthan? I haven't seen anything about that yet. Is everyone alright there?

I don't know anything about it other than what the instructors at FSI and locals at the hotel were saying. Maybe fake news... but a lot of local scuttlebutt.
