It's a ritual. It's one officer acknowledging the command of another.

As the late great George Carlin said "and who made this man a Captain, might I ask? Did I sleep through some sort of armed forces swearing in? Captain he's a pilot and let him be happy with that,if those sightseeing announcements are any mark of his intellect he's lucky to be working at all...tell the Captain,Air Marshall Carlin says go fornicate with yourself" **obviously edited for language*

Are guys just getting lazy, or are these things not formally taught anymore? I can remember 23 years ago in cargo, we had an about a half day course on the concept of jumpseating. What it is, how it is we are able to take part, how it is we can reciprocate, how to do it, what to do, what not to do, and how it can be lost if not done correctly. Many official and unofficial "thou shalt's" and official "thou shalt not's" were taught and reiterated, like the above items, so there was never any question of ambiguity. They were known knowns.

We had literally no mention of it whatsoever.

Honestly, there was zero "airline 101" whatsoever.

I think part of the issue wrt lack of education on JS etiquette is the fact that so many airlines, especially the regionals, are doing so much computer based training in lieu of sitting in an actual classroom for a couple of weeks. At best, you might get a couple of days of HR and paperwork, but no true indoc.

Having sat through NH ground recently (groaaaaan), the instructors didn't know poop from shinola about how to jump anyway.

Heck, I don't know how to jump anymore, with all the changes that have come about over time. All my JS time was 6-7 years prior to 9/11 and pre-CASS.

I got denied the jumpseat by a company pilot the very first time I ever tried it... It got better though. I was able to catch a ride on Freedom.

I really don't understand the whole "it wasn't explained to me" excuse. There is so much information that is just a 2 second google search away. Really, everything you need to know is here:

As a former jumpseat coordinator at a regional, I had to deal with stuff like this more often than I should have. It got to the point that I would ask people if they would just go jump in a new airplane or buy a new car or sign up for a timeshare without doing a little research first. They always said no, so then why try to jumpseat? Thankfully we were able to get the company to include some time on it during indoc, but ignorance is no excuse. Especially when it can place jumpseat agreements in jeopardy (i'm talking guys in jeans and flip-flops on legacies).

Generally speaking, who pairs jeans with flip flops?

I've jumpseated on my own carrier in jeans.....come at me bro

I'll up that and note that I just operated a revenue flight in jeans and a polo shirt....for premium pay.

It was fun meeting the Captain in the Flight Ops room dressed like that. "Hi! I'm your FO...I bet you're wondering where my uniform is..."
