Hi all,

I'm taking up an old 172 with no gps vfr in unfamiliar and busy airspace. I want to try to use some of this new fangled technology to help me stay as un-lost as possible.

I'm looking at getting one of these Bad Elf GPSs. Can I connect it to my iPad to see where I am on a sectional chart? How accurate are they and do you have any app recommendations?

Thanks!!

I've "heard" they work great when connected to a surface running JeppFD pro, not sure about iPads. Although, they were initially designed to interface with iOS. I guess it depends on what charting program you're using.

Flew around the country for a year and a half doing survey with cellular enabled iPad mini and Foreflight, highly accurate in my experience and would recommend that setup.

If you're an iPad user, ForeFlight and build yourself a STRATUX. $120, ADS-B services too.

Sent from my StarTac using Etch A Sketch.

Used that same bad elf pro with Foreflight for 2 years straight and never once had an issue, best 150 bucks I ever spent.

i hear they only work on the taxi diagram below a certain speed

So you would advocate heads down comparing a chart to outside in "busy airspace" vs a instant feedback of where you are on an overlay? I mean I'm sure you'd lose #alaskacool points but that's being safer with technology.
Plus, nothing ruins fun like stressing out over if the water tower that signifies the Bravo shelf is the one behind you, the third one to the left in front of you, or the second from the right, all with a giant sectional unfolded all over the front seats.
