The Dreaded SSSS

Yeah our company memo says that we have to go out of security and back through security of we get the SSSS on our boarding card after security.

Big fat nope. I'd be on the phone with a union rep real quick.

"So you want me to show up 45 minutes early at an outstation for a dead head, go through security, try and find something in the airport to eat, because nothing is open at 5am, and still make this dead head? Guess you had better rebook me on the next one then, cause it's gonna be close."

This is a TSA thing. The big computer in the sky knows if you've been given a selectee status, it would not be worth it to ignore it, and I doubt very much whether there is anything anyone can do about this.

This thread reminds me of when I bought a same day 1 way ticket on Frontier DEN-SFO, non-reved SDF-DEN on UA and ran to the gate not checked in like 2 minutes before doors close time due to an inbound delay. I show up to the gate a hot mess(300lbs back then) drivers licence in hand with the gate agent printing paperwork. She quickly checks me in telling me another plane needs to return to this gate so we need to go, "like now". She hands it to me and just freezes staring at it, "***SSSS****". After maybe 5 seconds of silence I said, "Yeah...I know what that means, but, I'm just going to go ahead and board". No barking dogs and cops with hoses waiting for me in SFO.

If I've gone through the KCM line, walked up to the gate and grabbed my boarding pass, and it has "SSSS" on it, which by the way, I've never seen as a DH, it'll be a cooooooold day in hell when I walk out, to go back through security.

And now since this is on the inter webs a whole bunch of folks are now gonna get the bright idea that if you're a crew member traveling for work or leisure that you must now retrieve your boarding pass in the non-sterile, icky, safe for terrorists zone of the airport and that you mustn't ever be allowed to go through any framework of security without first producing a boarding pass or a printed pairing that indicates that YOU, yes YOU, are indeed OPERATING A FLIGHT AS A REQUIRED CREWMEMBER.

Damn am I glad I get to be away from this cirrus for the next two and a half weeks.

You boys have fun with your no TCAS on the east coast. I'll be chilling by the beach after doing some dash-ones.

PEACE OUT!

What craphole Company do you work for (?) so I can make sure no one I know who would ever get the misguided idea to come into this embarrassment of a profession never even attempts to apply to your Company.

They'll put ANYONE in charge of Corporate Security, Compliance, and Safety these days...((yes, that means I've seen it first hand at at least one (1) organization I'm affiliated with.))

NOW REALLY - PEACE OUT!

I understand your point, but I just don't feel that "inconvience" is a valid reason to not follow security procedures.

This whole thing is getting ridiculous, and out of control. I'm not the guy the TSA needs to be worried about. It reminds me of the time the TSA came and inspected us when I was flying freight. They wanted to take our crash axes away because it could be used as a weapon. We were single pilot. It's a lot more than an inconvenience. It could lead to loss in pay. So no, I won't be leaving a "sterile" area. WTF is the point of KCM then? Why am I allowed to flash my badge, and go through precheck then. Basically, give me a break, the TSA hasn't stopped a single event since its inception. And I'm not the threat. I don't need to bring a weapon, I'm flying it (refrence 09/11/2001)

I understand and agree with everything your saying, and while I sympathize with the great injustice you would suffer by having to get rescreened it all comes down to the fact that neither you or I make the rules. I believe in following the rules, especially the safety and security rules because I have never found a particularly good reason not too, and the punishment for not obeying is usually significant.

Do you commute by plane to work?

Why, and how, are crew members selected?

Ah, what do you fly?

Welp, this is what it says....

Who prints out a boarding pass? For all of SJA's IT jackassery, all we have to do is scan the barcode on our IDs through the reader, get the little receipt with seat #, and board. I haven't printed out a seat request card or full boarding pass in two years.

Well, if you've never been a pilot, you probably shouldn't tell pilots how to deal with security issues.
I'm giving the same advice is give anyone: follow security procedures.

It seems extremely straightforward, and simple. Then again I guess it doesn't matter to me if you do or not, but one day the TSA will come down hard on someone for not following it, and I doubt very much whether their company will back them up on it when they discover the only reason they didn't follow a security procedure was "inconvenience."

I have no clue, I would assume there is a random factor. All I know is my company sent out a bulletin that spells out the procedures clearly, I will follow those procedures and I would advise anyone else who's company sent out any similar bulletin to follow those procedures.

Is this a issue?

No, not really. But it may be the reason I've never seen an SSSS while working. Did your company send that memo out to everyone in the pilot group do you know?
