Walmart Pilots get Massive Pay Raise

Working for a part 91 flight department can be like dealing with a crazy girlfriend. You agree on one thing even put it in writing and the next moment you are asked to do the exact opposite. "Oh after we land in Scotland can we XYZ and then go pick us up some BBQ? Because there is great BBQ in Scotland right? Oh and I'd really like it if you could come up with a cost comparison of these two sailboats? Yeah."

"Oh and did you get the email that I sent you a TXT about? I know you have family obligations but XYZ sports team is going to the playoffs and we are going to all of the games this year. Yeah"

BTW can you come in on Saturday?

Exactly why I love 121.

It's been said before but it's worth saying again. The best 91 jobs are the best flying jobs period. The worst 91 jobs are the worst flying jobs.

Everyone thinks the holy grail is 91... Sadly I think there are more quality 135 jobs than there are quality 91 jobs.

Yeah I have very little desire to go to part 91 corporate flying. I've known way too many people who had a job one day and went in to work the next to only ask "Where is the plane..."

if you know what i mean...

Fortune #1 companies should have world class flight departments with above average managers. Most do, that's why you never hear of openings.

I'm just a Air Force pilot's wife doing a little Google research of my own here on the Walmart corporate gig...my husband met the head guy (I think? Someone in management) of the aviation department by chance last week and the guy really talked it up to him, said he used to be an Air Force pilot himself, etc etc. Guy said he loved Bentonville, low cost of living, great area if you're into hunting/fishing/outdoorsy, said he would highly recommend that job over the airlines right now with the compensation and supposedly being home more nights than not (?)... Just wondering, could you explain what made you jump ship exactly? I actually ran across some of your posts from several years ago in a thread on a totally different site saying you loved flying for Walmart (in a nutshell). Wondering what changed. My husband is looking to switch over from active duty to the reserves here in another year and a half or so, has his ATP and an MbA, was even kicking some non-flying job ideas around but isn't too enthusiastic about anything not in aviation at this point. Thought the Walmart gig sounded better than the airlines from the perspective of hours away from the family.

What say you?

First, with the exception of the VP, none of their managers have ever worked for the airlines so they aren't in a position to say which is better.

That said, he is probably correct that your husband would be home more nights at Walmart than he would if he worked for the airlines BUT, he would have no control over what days those were. Unless things have changed in the almost three years since I left, they are still on a days off rotation. X number of days on, followed by X number of days off. There's no control of when those days happen. One of the things that caused so many pilots to leave when I did was that the department was cancelling days off and even vacation with extremely short notice. Bottom line, people don't quit jobs. People quit people.

Keep in mind that in 2010 when they needed to lay off pilots, 10 pilots were chosen without regard to seniority. While we knew why some were let go, others were let go because they clearly had gotten themselves sideways with a manager. That does not breed safety culture, but rather a culture of fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

The money at WM is excellent right now and NW Arkansas is a great place to live. As soon as they replace about three of the four chief pilots I think it will go back to being a good place to work. Corporate jobs change with time and management priorities. WM will always be a discount retailer and they will pinch pennies wherever they can whether it be meals, hotels, or staffing. I absolutely LOVED that job for about 5 years, tolerated it for another 2, and left when I realized that I hated going to work and was either going to quit or ultimately be fired by a chief pilot who didn't think very highly of me.

At the end of the day, in 2013/14 about 10% of the pilots left the company to go to the airlines and other corporate flight departments. Most took big pay cuts. Two went to Saudi Arabia to fly the same airplane. They have families in the US. Since they left, the company increased staffing and increased salary. Nothing else changed. It stopped attrition though, so hopefully that was enough.

Best of luck whatever you decide.
