C172 aerial mapping (northern states)

Many pilots chose to camp to save as much money as they could. Nick also put a stop to that last year. Morale of the story is do your own research, interview wherever will take you and go from there. Debating about which picto vender to go to is like debating which regional sucks less. At the end of the day they all pretty much pay the same thing and you get your time to move onto something better.

I have heard of pilots at Air America camping to save money in the past as well, in fact, I believe some of our pilots camped at the FBO at the airport in Iowa I used to instruct out of. I don't think we officially have a policy against it but naturally management isn't to keen on it, since it does have the potential to reflect poorly on the company. To my knowledge no one has done it in my time here.

I'm glad conditions are improving at Northern States, but if you're looking for work you may also want to send a resume into Air America. If they haven't already found someone to fill it I had heard a pretty credible rumor that they were looking to bring on a replacement pilot in late February and if they don't have someone internally lined up for it it'd be an excellent chance to hit the road during the busiest months of the season and maybe even get in on some of the Summer work.

The biggest pros compared to other vendors are their rotation and vacation based schedules as well as their large fleet of Aztecs. I really enjoyed my time at AA and have zero regrets looking back. That said I've got nothing, but respect for pilots from other vendors and am grateful that I was able to build my flight time flying Picto as opposed to working many of the flight instructor gigs that I had looked into.

It's not a bad time to put your information in with Air America as they typically do hire quite a few guys in May and if the pilot's lucky they can get in on the busiest flying provided the projects are there. Last season a lot of the new guys that were hired in May ended up flying Aztecs before the end of the Summer as a lot of vets decided to move on to the regionals or corporate. I don't see that happening this year to the same extent, but for low time pilots opportunities as good are very hard to come by.

I would second this. I was hired at Air America last May (I applied in January 2014) and have been happy with it so far. Honestly if you are looking for work it probably wouldn't hurt to apply at every vendor. And summer, particularly early summer, is likely to be very busy, and because of the long days you can get more flying in each day. But it varies a lot from year to year. Last summer there wasn't much work at all after mid June, and we were supposed to have some large projects that ended up falling through. But from what others have told me there have been summers in the past that were much busier.

85K was mine back in 09' and 10'. 5485Kooler. I remember having to cover up the vents with duct tape to keep from freezing inside. I kept that thing cleaned and waxed like a spit-shine. Surprised to hear it got a new coat of paint. It would be fun to see a couple pics.

There was no paint left on that thing to wax. I did nearly freeze to death in that thing. The K was for Klunk in my season with it haha.

Lol yeah I'm not sure... Maybe we were the only ones to do that, gotta keep the Hobbs turning
 
Klunk burned through quarts of oil regularly years ago

One day we actually met a guy who instructed in that same plane nearly 20 years ago, that was funny.
