ATP Written

So, I guess that I am taking it in the next month. I am also guessing that everyone else here that doesn't have a Multi-ATP will be taking it as well? I had better book that exam appointment now... Still have two years to knock out those pesky 50 multi hours.

Quick background: Price will be going up, from $150, to about $20,000 August 1st.

I will go out on a limb, and assume that no regional has yet created the required training programs, or has any plans to do so.

This whole ATP class is so stupid. Imagine if you read a job post that said if you spend $60,000 + on training and then spend years as a CFI or similar crap paying jobs that you will one day have the privilege to pay even more for a stupid class to make you qualified to make $25,000 per year. Yay!

Not an airline guy here... How different are the new ATP written training requirements from what airlines already offer as part of the IOE and type certificate process?

Pretty much all airlines require applicants to have the ATP written, or an ATP, before they are hired. But yeah, the training isn't much different than what new hires would be doing anyway, just much more of it.

I thought the required pre-ATP written training was designed to be very similar to what airlines are doing already and that training departments would easily get their programs certified since they're all part 142 anyway. How many sim hours is the average regional IOE/type rating?

Yes, I recognize this conversation is like a couple of bass fisherman discussing how to land a marlin.

After too many hrs of jets and juleps, my cognitive capacity ain't what is used to be. So perhaps it's no surprise I just don't understand the logic behind this new training requirement. Why must one get "practical" training before taking a "knowledge" exam? I thought those two words- "knowledge" and "practical" -were kinda like, er, definition words to denote a difference between the two types of learning. Apparently no longer. Now folks are going to have to buy sim time before they can sit for the knowledge test.
Hypothetically, lets assume the FAA desires to see more training completed before granting an ATP certificate. Ok, well, perhaps a cogent argument can be made to support that stance; Perhaps that argument is even valid. However, if it is, it only makes sense to make the additional ATP practical training a prerequisite for the ATP practical test. Why would the FAA-industrial complex attach a practical training requirement to the knowledge test?! There seems to be no logical explanation for this weird conflation of learning domains... except perhaps cronyism and kickbacks.

Just took my ATP written again(first one expired) after studying with the Sheppard Air program. The good news: I only missed two. The bad news: I don't get the refund for scoring below an 80.
I do...I missed every single question regarding dispatch releases as alternate fuel req. I could never remember the regs on those. Oh well. Looks like I saved some money in the process.

80 is now the new 70 for all the tests, right?

I'm also trying to get this done as well. Although for the time being I'm using ASA. I'll buy Shepherd Air when I get closer.

I'm in no way willing to see how this new rule will play out with out getting it done.

When I went through training and IOE, most of the new requirements were covered during the training (although some of it was done on computers, which isn't allowed with the new rules), and the sim time would have met the new requirements as well.

From talking to a check airman a few weeks ago, it sounds like only a few tweaks need to be made to the initial ground syllabus at most regionals to satisfy the classroom requirements, but exactly how to deal with the sim requirement (since a company could spend several grand on sim time to have someone fail the written) is a slightly more difficult issue.

All Written exams go up to $165.00 starting July 1st. Better get them done now!

What in the world do they need that much money for a written test for?? Glad I took mine last month. It looks like people are starting to ramp up for this ATP written now.
