Anyone used this app yet? I think it just came out and is either iPad only or the Android version isn't out yet, not sure. It says that there is no subscription(free) and it comes with geo referenced plates and airport diagrams.

I'm currently looking at VFR gps solutions, and for the cost of a 296 I can buy a tablet(with foreflight or maybe this) all day, just kind of wondering if these apps really cut it compared to a standalone gps for doing things like being very close to but staying out of airspace and finding user created waypoints. Basically, how accurate are they?
 
JeppFD just added geo-referenced plates on its app, and it works great. Certainly more than sufficient for VFR solutions.

I could see that happening.. I use it mostly in Cessna's/Cub's. We have a GDL39 in the Lancair that does a fine job (relatively) fast and low ;)

Yeah we are flying with situational awareness overkill with 2 iPads and a G1000. We are never lost!

The only way to have more situational awareness would be having the crop duster in your avatar riding in the right seat making that face!

I use a Galaxy Tab 10.1, the built-in GPS is ok 75% of the time but it has periods where it just cannot get a good signal (usually when you really want it). I recently bought the GlobalSat BT-368i BlueTooth GPS for $60 and it totally rocks. It runs the Sirf Star III GPS chip, which is WAAS enabled and gets a locked on signal all the time and is dead-on accurate. I like to save my tracks often to review with students and just for fun and there used to be big jagged sections where the tablets GPS would drop, with the BT-368 it's always dead on. Highly recommend.

As far as apps, I still use Avilution Aviation Maps on Android. I spent a month demo'ing Garmin Pilot and was planning to buy it, but I just wasn't impressed. I've also used the FltPlan app and was very unimpressed.


 
Its got a lot of kinks that need to be ironed out, but its FREE :-). Personally I love WingX, they just need a "binder" page like the other apps

if you already have an ipad and it doesn't have GPS, buy a GPS and foreflight. if it does have a builtin GPS, just get foreflight.

we did the Chicago bravo last year and with my builtin gps I was able to get within a quarter mile of the rings (while talking on freq without clearance) without any issues. always watching the accuracy like a hawk though.

that said, I also had my kln94 setup for DME to cross reference. but after a season of cross referencing, I am very confident in the accuracy of the ipad GPS (and I'm sure the addon GPSes are just as accurate if not more)
 
+1 on the iPad with fore flight. Not sure how it will do in your King Air but im happy with it the the Aztec.
 
Actually got an iPhone with foreflight working an in crj200 in cruise a few weeks ago. Exit row for the win!

Only need iOS 6.0 for the Fltplan go. Too bad my iPad is stuck at 5.1.1.

It's not really for the king air. That thing already has enough wizardry in it, that if I can't figure out where I am, I need to stop flying. It's for down low and slow in a /X machine.
I don't have an ipad or a 296, and I'm trying to decide between the two for truly VFR only purposes. Finding things that aren't published on maps, making sure that pass is in fact the one I want and I'm exactly where I think I am, etc.

honestly? second or third gen used ipad with external GPS would be my vote. or an ipad mini with external gps. whatever is ccheaper.

the 296 is going to be expensive and never be as up to date as the foreflight (for the same price)

Having an iPad has changed the way I approach life. Now, I go to my laptop only if I need to accomplish some hard-core excel, power-point, or document review work. All my banking, flight scheduling, reading, talking with the wife when on the road, and emailing is done on my iPad. What can the 296 do when you're not flying?

Well the thing is, if it can't accomplish what I want it to while flying and I still need a standalone gps, I'm not going to buy it. The purpose is for flight, anything else is just extra. And honestly, I'd rather buy an android device, but forflight and the like are not available.

I think you get a lot for your money with an iPad, fore flight, and a GPS puck.

Screw Foreflight, on Android you can take your pick of:

Garmin Pilot
Avilution
Naviator
FltPlan.com
and others..

They pretty much all do the same things, all charts, optional geo-referenced plates and taxi, etc, duats, etc... just a matter of personal preferences in layout and flow
