Latest Buddy Pass Faux Pas...!

GhostRider in the Sky
We all remember the family last year who cried to the national news that the airline was unfair to leave them behind for four days while on buddy passes... then some kind viewer bought them full fare tickets home.

Well today on some national news channel playing in the hotel lobby I saw that two black men are suing US Airways for racial discrimination and emotional suffering because they were denied boarding into first class... they were wearing baseball caps, tshirts, jeans and tennis shoes. They told the camera that they'd never been so discriminated against, and that other 1st class pax were allowed to wear street clothes. Airline says No you have to be in business casual. SO they filed suit.

The only caveat?... THEY WERE ON BUDDY PASSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts?

"Are you dressed for first?"
"Yes sir."
"Shoes?"
"Yes, sir."

(actual exchange I have participated in.)

US Airways will charge Express employees the $20 upgrade to sit in first if there is no coach seat available, if you don't pay you stay and the plane goes out with open seats.

I wouldn't want those to be my buddy passes (if we still had them). That employee may stand to have their own non-rev benefits pulled.

This was on the local news last night in LA. What really struck me was the comment that the attorney for the two guys claims that US Airways just made up this non-rev policy in response to the incident and the lawsuit. Didn't exist before....

I'm sure Airways will quickly find it buried in a manual somewhere.
No need, it's in one of the first few pages of the tiny employee travel manual.

This just goes to show why I have an unused bank of buddy passes at the end of every year.

It's been in the travel manual since the merger. Prior to the merger the dress code for first was even more strict. When I started you couldn't even non rev in coach if you were wearing jeans.

When I was a wee lad, a tie was required. True story.

When I was with US there were plenty of times I was denied first for being in jeans. They changed that policy a few years ago but still don't allow sneakers. I'm sure these gentlemen saw revenue first class pax (who may wear whatever they like) boarding and immediately felt as if they were discriminated against. Sounds to me like another case of non-revs being uneducated.

Damn.

Someone just lost their travel privileges.

I know a non rev traveling on my privileges acts a fool, I lose them too.

Oh and we had a passenger set her phone down in the forward galley, told the purser to "Charge it", sat down in coach, had a problem with the noise and demanded the pilot rest seat in business elite.

Low and behold.... A non rev.

That behavior is unacceptable for a revenue pax! A non-rev?! Ahh..... Oh my.
