Flying overseas and then returning to a major

I have a connection at a SouthEast Asian domestic carrier to sit right seat 737/320 if I bring my own type rating. Income overseas would be good and I'm thinking I could return to the states after 5 years of flying with a bunch of ME TPIC. I am also in the process of applying to domestic regionals right now. The uncertainty of the regional model has me worried.

How would you regard this type of widebody flying overseas if you were on the hiring team at a mainline carrier?

Sorry, I'm not an airline (regional/major/national) pilot guy or anything fancy of sort. So I can't answer your question. Just out of curiosity, WHY do you think it may be viewed as negative?????

Skip the regionals if your able. As along as it not a PFT type of scheme.... I know I would take it. I AM NOT willing to take a $15-25k pay-cut just to go fly a shinny jet for XXXX unstable regional airline. I HAVE PAID MY AVIATION DUES from enlisted military line rat to military aircraft mech back down to ramp agent loading bags while finishing B.S. Aviation degree. Then paid my dues again working as a customer service rep. I've earned my current income and position. Only dues left is to do my CFI thingy and enjoy teaching the future (P/T). But that's about it.

If that major airline HR Rep / Fancy Pilot have a problem with your GREAT opportunity and experiences gained flying overseas (non PFT of course) then that's not where you want to be.

A little birdie told me that Fedex isn't a fan of people that were previous Expats unless they lived in the US for a few years after the experience. Doesn't make sense to me so it is probably false.

I read somewhere that has to do with them carrying US mail and classified documents. Need to have resided in US for X amount of time for clearance.

Quick upgrade I take it?

Projected upgrade in 2-3 years, yeah.

That ain't bad. I'd be sure to make sure there's an allowance for you to upgrade in the contract; I don't have direct experience as an expat, but I do know that a fair number of those contracts are for FO or CA only.

I'd be on that like white on rice. Go get a quickie 737 type and pack yer bags. $8k is a small price to pay to A) Avoid The Suck, B) Make The Cheddar, and C) See The World. Do eet!

Which country? After 5 years you might not want to come back. Especially if you are single :)

This particular contact is in Indonesia. I've lived there before so I have some idea what I'd be getting into. I have another friend in the Philippines. But that would be flying an ATR I think.

I'd take whichever provided a more realistic chance for PIC quickly...there seem to be tons of contracts for ATR pilots overseas, and they're quite remunerative. Obviously, all other things being equal, you go for the big, shiny jet, but if you can get in to the left seat faster...

Be careful of the postal agreement. Companies like FedEx have this and will inhibit you from working there as the above posters have said.

The future is pretty bleak in the US, anyway, and FedEx only hires you if you have 14 internal references, every one of which has hung out with you at the O-club at least twice.

Interesting about the 5 year rule that FedEx has. I "live" out of the country right now flying for a carrier in Central America, however my credit cards and mailing address are in the states and I come back at least once a month for things.

Would that still be considered "living" in the US? I file my taxes from a US address too.
