Portland Relocation

PODUNK
I'm relocating to Portland here in the next month and was looking for some insight from my fellow JCers who currently or have resided here. How is the job market for a low time commercial pilot? Aviation life? Night life? Are all these stories about hippies that I'm hearing of true?

The hippy population isn't nearly as noticeable as Eugene, SF, elsewhere. But NE portland, and to a lesser extent everywhere else in the "city", there are basically nothing but hipster clones as far as the eye can see. It is humorous, but gets a little old after a while. Watch some "Portlandia".....I assure you that it is about the most accurate depiction you will find, even at it's most absurd moments.

Night life is awesome! Its the aviation that isnt... But ameriflight is hiring. I think horizon was hiring a while back.

hillsboro aviation is an option for flight instructing. I hear they always stay somewhat busy. not sure if you have your cfi but maybe an option. Portland is a place where pabst blue ribbon is the drink of choice and the women are generally a let down. Good Luck

That's true, my older brother and his ex-wife were hipsters 15-20 years ago. He still kind of is, but is more of a PDX yuppie now, which involves driving a volvo wagon, having an entire household of things that qualify as "form over function", paying outrageous amounts of money for "natural" (ie boring) toys for the kids, and getting like 4 items for $200 at whole foods. Then again, I am psyched for WF to open in VA Beach, so I guess I can't really talk :)

Try to live in Washington.

Portland has the worst drivers in the US.

They are pretty bad at least in terms of being grandmothers behind the wheel, but they don't hold a candle to Virginia drivers.........absolutely the worst I have seen anywhere, to include abroad. They are just incredibly incompetent, as well as aggressive, which makes for a LOT of accidents and scary moments. I think half of them are drunk continuously though, so that might be part of it, as I can't imagine an entire group of people being that outrageously horrible without some outside influence.

Don't hold back now AMG. No need to be diplomatic. What's your real opinion.... without all the sugar coating? :)

So they only buy organic toys for their kids then hah? I wish we had a WF in GFK, or Trader Joes...or a store that offered fresh stuff. As far as drivers Portland can be bad, but be prepared for when the snow hits (even less than an inch) all hell breaks loose and everyone forgets to drive, and school gets cancelled!

Haha I love my big bro and his family (new wife, 2 awesome nephews) but I do get a laugh out of them sometimes. They are actually quite tame compared to a lot of the folks I know from there. I went to some art showing/house party with a childhood friend of mine last dec up there, and it was nearly straight out of that show. Just a whole lot of people trying way too hard to look cool to each other. The worst part is the inevitable discussion that ensues when they find out I'm in the military. I long ago learned to not advertise that with those types of people, and I certainly don't elaborate on what specifically it is that I do, but it is always the same patronizing sympathy show, where they encourage me to get out and "use your GI Bill" to go to college. "They pay for your school right?" I normally just play into it to see how many Lols I can get out of their absolute ignorance. So there ya go qutch, my true feelings :)

Put a bird on it.

Pabst blue ribbon? In Portland, OR? Couldn't be further from the truth!

There is a captain I fly with that goes to Whole Foods to buy all his bread making essentials. He pays about $30 to make a loaf of bread. I wish I could afford that, I can barely pay for my free cheese!
hmmm but I bet that bread is yummy. My mom used to make fresh bread every week. Good stuff it was.

It is some of the best sourdough I have tasted but I couldn't bring myself to spend $30 for a loaf. That is almost a whole months worth of driving to work! I can't wait till I start ATR training and don't have to drive to work and get per diem!

And before I drive this off track, move to Washington to save yourself on the income tax and buy everything in Oregon!
