So I thought this was funny. At the same time I wonder if the general public actually thinks this way. I'm also wondering how pilots can regain the respect of the general public.

Stand up straight, wear their uniforms correctly and completely, reduce (you'll never eliminate) embarrassing episodes in the press regarding off-duty conduct...
 
I'm far more concerned about the use of a portable electronic device- especially not in "airplane mode". I mean, what is ESPN really trying to say here? Everyone knows streaming data like that would cause interference with the "land" mode of the AP anyway. WTFO?
 
Joe Sixpack is somewhere between a virus and a protozoa on the evolutionary scale. It'll all go a lot smoother for us when we stop worrying about what passes for "thought" in his head and get back to brickbats and throwing heavy, dense things through windshields.

My personal favorite scene is in Pushing Tin, when they are at the restaurant for breakfast and the girls ask if they are pilots and they all bust up laughing..."yaaaaa derrrrrrrrrrr I drivaaaahhhh plaaaanness".. Cracks me up every time.

I've been asked if that movie is "realistic"

My response is always: "The ATC part is not realistic, however the personalities of controllers is represented with supreme perfection.
 
Father in law asked me the other day if I have to take my airplane off auto-pilot to land. Suffice to say that the general public thinks we basically press a button before takeoff, and un-press it after landing. He sounded genuinely confused when I told him that I rarely use pilot relief modes aside from long cross country transits after I get to cruise altitude.
 
Had a pilot choke up on frequency the one day, or gag on his food, sounded like he was still chewing responding to me, then started coughing, the replies were great all different crews...

"Oh, careful don't choke on your caviar"
BAW pilot: "Caviar? I'm not quite sure what decade you're flying in"
"Caviar? Gross, only fresh lobster tails for us!"
"Wheres the instructions on how to open this bag of stale peanuts anyway"
Finally the original crew came on, in the background you could still hear the other pilot coughing away...
"ABC123 descending FL340.... and he's fine"
