I am looking at advancing into my aviation career and would like to know. How do you break into this field if you don't have jet time or king air time in the beginning? Would like recommendations of were to start. I am mostly seeing jobs that you have to have time in type for SIC I am in a loss unless I am missing something. Am I as a pilot supposed to pay for a type rating to break into this world? And if so many places want time in type. How do you get time in type if you cant get hired unless you have this. Anyone in the Corporate world could give me the tools to assist me would be greatly appreciated. I am 44 retired non flying military and looking in advancing in this new career.

Ok first of all please keep in mind I'm just trying to help. You have pleanty of flight time to break into a 135 or 91 job. Some may be hesitant to hire you because you have not flown in a 135 environment. There are many reasons for this. Mostly because it is a unique job and you will be thrown into an environment where your expected to already know how to do your job: How to address PAX, when to show up at the airplane, how to clean the aircraft everything is super specific and there is no time to teach you. Also the flying is demanding and there is no time to teach you. Your best approach is to "pound the pavement". You already spend alot of time at the airport already. Walk into some airport offices ask about employment opportunities. Shake some hands. I always wonder what it will be like to deal with you 24/7 on the road. I don't really care what you fly like. I assume you already know how to do that.

This is rough part: Also keep in mind that if your a retired guy who just wants to do this for fun and you will work for free and pay for your type: I hate you. Seriously. For the last X number of years I have been scraping my way along at XYZ company asking for raises, refusing to pay for charts and uniforms and trying to keep my quality of life on the road from taking a nosedive. Well all of the sudden some retired guy just shows up and completely undermines all of my efforts. You have enough flight time to replace me and many other 1st officers.

You are managments dream. They don't care what you fly like. Captain X is good enough to fly single pilot in a G4. Shove retired guy into the airplane with a 61.55 sign off. Insurance requirement: no problem. Overworked underpaid captain, who cares. Retired guy doesn't even value his free time. Which is really what you should be paid for. Your time at home doing what you love. Which I am assuming isn't rotting away in a hotel room away from loved ones unable to even go for a walk for fear of missing a pop up. Not to mention getting no respect from, line crew, pilots, passengers or mgmt. Your just a sea monkey just add water and the airplane goes.

If you walked into my place of employment or an FBO and started in with how you are willing to work for free I would personally do anything to keep you from being hired. Your the last guy I want to work with. Sorry. That is just how it is. So now you know what to hide. If your a jerk you can use my help to sell yourself as a free meatbag to satisfy insurance. If your not you will settle for nothing less than a living wage and a safe working environment.

Your call.

Man, Beef, I don't remember him saying he was willing to work for nothing... he said he is retired military, not some retiree just looking for something to do in his free time. I know how worked up we can get, and rightfully so, over someone saying that, but he didn't.

To the OP, you just have to be in the right place at the right time. You have to be the one that bumps into the Chief Pilot or DO that day that they realize they need a new pilot. You have to be the guy that introduces himself to a pilot in the pilot lounge and makes a good enough impression that the pilot tells his boss about you. I hate to say it, but it is who you know. Networking is essential in the 135/91 world.

Without more multi time and especially more instrument time, you'll struggle to get any kind of PIC position. A year at AMF would probably help your prospects.

Good luck! Corporate really seems to be opening up. I think you will find something without much trouble.

Go intern at a FSI Center for a while. Itll work wonders for your contacts and youll get some good experience learning the avionics and systems.

I am not willing work for free that is not the case. I retired from the military at age 39 and 2 days later when though airline flight school on my dime and during the end of training the field took a tank (2007/2008). I am only looking to start a new career in aviation. I am still currently working and flying a multi engine and building time in the process. I figured I was paying my dues by flying and building time. I am not one that's trying to get somewhere at 300 tt hours. By the next 2 months should have close to 3500 tt and 700 tt multi. And as for living in hotels I have only been home 2 and a 1/2 months in the last 2 years so I know hotels. And I have done this for the last 5 years. This is the sacrifice I have made to pay my dues.

Well as for a PIC position I am more looking for a SIC position until I built up enough time and more experience. Don't mean to sound dumb or anything what is AMF?

AMF = Ameriflight - 135 freight.

You are probably qualified for a much better QOL elsewhere though!

Get your CFI...

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

On a serious note, go hang out at your local airport too. Someone around there is flying a baron or 421 or king air. Make friends. Unfortunately corporate is a tight community that sometime requires you to start from the bottom and work your way up. That is how I got my early corporate jobs.

Now I feel dumb I was looking at them and MAC and ACC Picking up the family and moving would be tough for a year gig. Don't get me wrong I will move for any position that would be more long term.

Then why on earth would you pay for a type?

You have to meet people and make a good impression. Be personable, persistent, and available.

More true words have never been written.

I've never been looking for a flying gig, but do know a bunch of folks that would (I think) totally go to bat to get me in the door for anything I were qualified for. Just takes time and doing right by people.

I would like to apologize to the OP. if I offended you. I am sorry. Honestly I miss read part of your post and stupidly responded without double checking. I see that you do not intend to work for free nor pay for your type and this was a rhetorical question based I think on frustration.

I have worked with the independently wealthy who have both worked for free and paid for type training. Please excuse me but this is a rather sensitive topic for me. These individuals greatly undermined my pay, schedule and quality of life before getting bored with playing pilot and moving on to something else. This was followed by a conveyor belt of similar people. Rinse, wash and repeat.

Good luck to you Sir.

Not a problem and thank you. I just keep applying over and over hoping I will get something soon.
