DTW Parking

What is the current airline crew rate for parking at DTW? I've read there's a $540/yr deal for crew, but a lot of information on the innernets is out-dated. Are there any hotels that let you park in their lot and slip the van driver 10 bucks kind of deal? Any private off-airport parking lots with crew rates?

Airline parking is the only place that offers a deal. 45/month 540/yr. big yellow vans off of merrimam rd.

You need a DTW SIDA or badge to park in the lot now. Thats what we're using to access the lot.

Qwik Park has a $4/day with a airline badge rate. I had to park there before I got my DTW lot access pass. As stated above, we've switched to using the SIDA badges to access the instead of the passes now. Not sure how that's going to work for the folks who have their airline buy them passes like EGF...

The asinine part about it is, the old scanner that hangs from the mirror still works because that's what people with no SIDA badges use to get in. A friend of mine had his SIDA badge revoked and they just told him to keep using the old thing.

So, why change it?

And secondly, if we don't need to hang anything from the mirror, then why did we ever have to hang something from the mirror?

JaceTheAce, I'd go with the AirlinesParking company mentioned above. If you aren't going to be able to take advantage of the perks of using a DTW SIDA badge, that is, skipping security on your way into work when you're flying a flight out, then there's no need to pay the terrible employee parking lot the same rate as the AirlinesParking charges when they've got a van waiting EVERY time and a nice guarded parking lot.

On the employee bus one night a few weeks ago sitting near each other were a Delta guy, a jetBlue guy, and I. I asked the jetBlue guy about parking rates because I knew he was obviously based elsewhere (JFK) but used DTW to commute out of. He then told me about a guy in his JFK crashpad that was robbed and punched in the DTW lot at his car one night. There is no guard anymore at the entrance and the bus schedule is inconvenient for non-SIDA people. I wouldn't bother. I don't know why I mentioned the Delta guy in this short story. I guess he's my witness.

Jtrain will have to give his advice too, since he uses the place to commute out of. He'll probably reply on here when he gets done shopping for diapers and crib supplies.

Replied in facebookland.

I parked in the south lot for about a month before I gave up. It took me an hour and a half to get to my car from the north terminal once.

Why they didn't put some sort of train between the terminals when they built the north terminal is absolutely beyond me. I guess there probably just isn't a lot of transfer between the terminals other than flight crew.

Can you get a SIDA badge without being based in DTW? Like others have said the scheduling of the buses sucks but at least it would be free.

Yeah, every time I've been on the terminal to terminal bus that goes about every 20 minutes, I think I've seen no more than three or four other people on it, and a few times it's just been me. A train running every 10 minutes would just go empty most of the time.

I'm going to be commuting out of DTW starting in June and am planning on using AirlinesParking. Seems like a good deal and every time I've overnighted in DTW recently I've seen their shuttle buses ALL the time which means no waiting around.

JaceTheAce, you moving up there as well?

As in, indefinitely?

At least until the Fall. We are heading up next weekend to look for apartment rentals and are going to try to find something with a 6 month lease. I've got an iron in the fire that may have me (maybe), possibly, if I get lucky (did I qualify that enough?), moving back to the west coast after August, but until such time I think we are going to be sticking around there. My wife's grandparents live up there so she's got family, and I've got a bunch of my "internet friends" so it's all good. It's a huge step up from Dayton any way (sorry DAY peeps!).

So do most pilots pay to have their car at the airport? Or do many get public transit to their base?

When it comes to 121 airline guys that commute it varies greatly. I fly out of AZO to DTW for work and my yearly parking pass at AZO is $25. I also have a parking pass at DTW since it's my domicile and that's taken care of by the company I work for. I've heard of some places being $400-500/year for a parking pass at the airports they commute from.

Yea I was looking at the airlines parking and wondering if they expected pilots to pay $400 a year. That would be a ton of money just for a few airports. I figured they would have employee parking or something.

Thanks for the info
