Has any one used the Post 9/11 GI Bill at UND

First off let me introduce myself. My name is Jake and I am new to this forum. I am currently in the Navy as a P-3 Flight Engineer. I have been accepted to UND for Commercial Aviation and have started taking classes. I have about a year and half left on my contract and then my wife and I will move up to ND and i will start taking classes there and flying. My question is, Has any one used the Post 9/11 GI Bill there recently? If so, can you give me any pointers that I might need to know. Ive talked with Carol Anson the VA rep and from what she tells me and what ive read so far it sounds like its all covered. Also if there is anything in general that I might need to know about UND please let me know. Thanks in advance!

I'm using the post 9/11 right now at UND and all flight training will be covered for you ice you get here. I'm assuming you are using TA right now and not using the go bill topup. If your using the topup I reccomand stop using it since money wise your better off using the gi bill after you get out.

As far as pointers fly as often as possible and finish your flying as early in each semester as possible. Also take advantage of the summers as well. It's the same course but only uses 1/2 the time from your gi bill.

Oh and take seaplane and tail wheel. Just one more fun thing to do and adds one more thing you can put on a resume.

I'm sure you know this but dot forget to count all your FE time as well when it comes to applying for pilot jobs.

That is so good. Im so glad I finally found someone in my shoes that I could inside info from. Yeah I plan on going to school non-stop so that way I can collect BAH all year. As far as my TA, that is what I am using. I haven't even started tapping into my GI Bill. I should have around 1500 to 2000 hours as a flight engineer, but I am just wondering how many of those will transfer over and if they even will, but I do think it will help me. On top of that I will have my journeymans certificate for apprenticship for Powerplants, Structural Mechanic, and Aviation Electrician. Don't know if those will help but it can't hurt me.

If you don't mind me asking, where were you stationed and how was it going to ND? Right now im stationed in Hawaii so its 85 year round, im afraid when I get there its going to be miserable.
What did you do before and was it hard to transition back from military to college?

So your saying that you pay nothing a year except maybe books and charts, etc., But as far as tuition and flight costs its 100% free?

I'll be starting next Spring on the GI Bill. It was my understanding, (seemed to be confirmed by Carol Anson) that only required courses for the major (Commercial Aviation) would be covered. Is that true, or were you able to get seaplane and tail wheel covered?

The GI Bill will only cover courses certified by the school to be required for the degree. Taking any additional courses will be out of members pocket.

As for the FE time. Not really any benefit in gaining the degree courses. However, it has certainly helped out with the flying just based on the prior experience in an aircraft flight deck. I have to say, all the CFI's I've flown with love the fact they don't have to handle radios or anything for me.

Also, as it stands now, your FE time can be used on a 3 to 1 ratio up to 500 hours as experience toward an ATP license someday. So, instead of 1,500 hrs, you only will need 1,000. The only thing I'm trying to figure out is with the new ATP rule possibly going into effect, stating that graduates of a accredited degree only need 1,000 hrs. Wondering if that means with my 500 FE time I'll only need 500 PIC... Grey area that hasn't been spelled out anywhere yet.

Good luck with UND! I do have a pilot or two here in E-6s that went there for their training and loved it. My plan is to stay local here and work through OU. But, basically the same idea you already have in place.

Yes all required courses are covered, the good thing is, there are electives that you get to take and you can use Seaplane and Tailwheel as your electives. So it will be covered.

I'm not sure how the FE time transfers, I know it does, but that is for when you get a job later on, not related to your schooling here.

I was stationed much further south, where it was warm. Here it honestly sucks. I was in Hawaii two years ago and I know the weather, you'll definitely miss it once you get here. Yes it can and will more then likely be miserable for you, unless your from up here and are used to it.

The books and charts are part of the GI Bill, so at the beginning of each semester you'll get a lump sum and that has always covered all my charts and books for each semester.

Honestly, if I did it over again, I would have looked harder into Daytona Beach Embry Riddle because the BAH is 300 more a month there and it isn't more expensive to live there then here. Unless you are stuck coming here, I'd look into all your options. And the weather is more along what your used to there as well. I know I missed it.

The problem with Embry is it is a private school... If you look closely at the GI BILL it says private schools are capped at 17,500...which wont even cover the tuition let alone flight...Honestly UND seems to be the best way to go..I will miss the weather but i guess ill learn how tofly in snow!

Still, weigh all your options... There are other public universities with flight programs.

UND gives automatic in-state tuition to veterans which is another advantage, since the GI Bill won't cover the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition.

I didn't know about the private versus public issue till tonight.

But look at all the options not just the big universities.

Looking around most public schools do as well. But that is definitely a benefit.
