No Jobs For The Young Pilots

Wow...it's teh intrawebz....

If you are looking for something more mature that a pilot forum, I would suggest any of the innumerable Twilight Fan Forums.

Oh we're tame compared to that more "professional" forum directly related to our employment! :) How I love to troll sometimes.

Another thing I'd point out is, how many people can honestly say they don't sit at their job at some point and wish they didn't have some other job? A job is exactly that, a job. It's not a party

I thought the whole point was to move me from party to party... :D

Edit: In all seriousness, long about Day 5 I'm usually going "whoa, why am I here right now?" ;)

True, but that's too easy. It's like a Chatty Cathy doll...all you have to do is pull the string.

I too moved quite quickly initially. Not age wise, but compared to my peers. Got all my ratings done by Fall of my junior year and was CFIing immediately there after. Started MEI for free, paid for by the school and was ecstatic! I ran out of gas though. I became so burned out that I had to quit school and flight instructing for a couple months. My hairline is evidence enough of what I was going through mentally. Did nationwide survey flying and made a metric crap ton of cash(let me tell you all the fun I had flying a 172 all over the country sometime!), and now fly for a high paying(relatively) freight company. I'm 27 and am still in no rush at this point.

It's good that you have goals, but don't close yourself off from the other side of the airport. There's lots of fun jobs over there and most will pay at least double what you'll make as a regional FO. Just something to consider. Flying planes that were getting old when you were born isn't for everyone and it's certainly not glamorous. haha

I'll say this too since you're still young and it's slowly becoming more and more of a problem. Keep your record clean! It's VERY easy to get infractions for just about anything now-a-days. I've heard all about the "hurricane parties" and almost every other drinking story under the sun. That kind of behavior is jail worthy today, but most people get lucky. Remember this too, driving infractions are misdemeanors as well, just like assault or theft, and driving records are being scrutinized more and more, so keep the hot rodding for the track. I realize this part of my post is coming from left field, but I've seen what happens when all the pieces fall into place against a person and it is MUCH easier today to set yourself up for long term headaches by losing a little discretion with driving or alcohol use.

Keep the old cliche "Life is about the journey, not the destination" in mind. Go fly a lot of different airplanes and do every different type of job in aviation you can. You may find reaching your dream job at a very early age will leave you with a "what now" feeling. Not that it is a bad problem to have.

Alex.

I have to echo the "enjoy being young" sentiments. I've said it a hundred times and you're probably thinking you got it all figured out and being a regional FO is the only thing you want and can't wait. Go to college(physically), chase tail, drink beer, get a non-aviation degree, build friendships for life and get some experience not living at home. You have your whole life to work, I truly cherish my time in college and all the things I learned there that weren't taught in class.

I've met plenty of high school straight to "career" types and they are socially awkward and can't handle much else. There is no other way to say it, but put the SJS in check. Look closely at the next RJ you ride on. Right next to the cabin door is the surgeon general's warning about the health risks of SJS.
