Non-revs in Business/First

I have almost 5000 posts on this website. You can look through any of them and see that I post many things of value. Occasionally posting a thread that isn't quite serious, but still brings to light some valid customer service issues, isn't going to put me on someone's blacklist if I wasn't already on there (not that being on some poster's blacklist concerns me).

Just to take the edge off:

It's bad form, MQ nailed it.

The thing is, and I don't know if the OP falls into this category or not, some people just don't care. Their own personal satisfaction that they get from trolling or whatever, trumps any sort of respect or sense of decency for this place as a community.

Sure, sitting at home on reserve or between trips can be boring, but for FSM's sake, get a hobby or something.

The righteous indignation toward a regular poster having a little fun once in a blue moon is a bit much, but I sincerely apologize, and hope that I didn't offend any sensibilities. :)

It's not the fact that you are or are not a regular poster. It's the fact that the vast majority of people reading this forum are not and therefore have no idea who you are.

Joining this a bit late, but the majority of DB's that make up elite, diamond, etc tiers make me sick. I am seen so many display of Elitism, childish, behavior etc it is a joke. Make them buy the upgrade. On one coast to coast flight I was on a company paid ticket and having not feeling the best. I didn't want to deal with my crapy seat in coach I paid the upgrade fee for first so I could hopefully get some descent sleep before hitting the west coast running. You should have seen the hissy fit that was thrown at the gate and on the plane when some elite DB didn't get first and saw me sitting up there. He also gives me crap on the plane at which point I flipped my ticket receipt at him and tell I guess money talks.

On another flight I saw a guy getting off the plane and the FA hands him his coat from the closet. He goes off on her and tell here she needs to learn how to hold his jacket so he can put it on and he will be filing a compalin with UAL. I told to start walking adn he threaten to have me fired from UA. Of course I tell him to go for it. I am untouchable by UA management. Of course he doesn't know I don't work for them.

Back in my Saab days a guy tells the FA his wife doesn't talked to the hired help adn she'll have XYZ to drink. The FA tell us this in the cockpit. It was a darn shame the the drink service was cancelled by the PIC due to turbulence. I swear HPN pax are the worst...

Treat people with some F ing respect you and you might get it return

*rant over*

So no jokes? Wasn't there someone criticizing JC because of all the stupid inner clique jokes and y'all just brushed them off as "not getting it"?

Now, when someone has a legitimate point of discussion on an aviation-related topic, you're going to seek some sort of rational conversation about the topic where we can all participate and reach understanding an insight on the topic.

Since it was largely a trolling/"devils advocate at all costs" conversation where the point wasn't discussion but continuing to probe for more inroads to embroil users into an argument, well, that's deleterious to the forum.

Someone asks a seemingly legit, but somewhat misguided question about a 727, are they trolling? Are they somewhat misguided and seeking insight? Or do we just assume the worst and go fight in the lavatory about the merits of pulp-free orange juice and In-N-Out Burger?

My own personal example was the thread in General Topics about the Eagle situation. I had some insight from being through a few contracts, a strike, lots of picketing and a lot of bitching on the internet that I did during each. But then, I'm thinking, "Man, am I getting trolled? is this legit?" Now if I do that, you bet your sweet patootie there are other users that are wondering as well.

Troll the lav, who cares, but when that seeps up into the aviation-related topics, it's a pain in the butt.

I understand. My point being simply that, as a few have pointed out before, a select few are allowed to troll and be outright DBs while others are vilified at the first hint of off topic it calling inner circle members to task for hypocrisy

Double standard. Nothing new in human nature or the interwebs just thought this was a funny and very in point example if it.

You can always ask about an "inside joke" and you're as much "inner circle", if not moreso, than I, Mr. 2300+ posts and 6+ years of being a part of our community! :)

Come on man, that's like me teasing X-Forces for having curly hair, flat feet, rhythm and inability to get a cab in Birmingham! :)

I've been in 1st class 100+/- times on a simple upgrade (no miles, no money) while crew rode in the back. Most of my miles are on TWA and American. Once when a deadhead 767 pilot was next to me he said I (business traveler) was the bread and butter of any airline.

I did hold an AAirPass for 7 years. That and my Executive Platinum status usually meant I got the 1st free upgrade on the plane behind those buying a 1st class ticket.

why give them to non-revs for free? .

It's not free... The reason many people choose to work for an airline is because of travel benefits, whether the idea of them or the actual use, including the possibility of first/business seats. Because of this, the airline is able to pay their employees less. So in essence, the employees pay for those seats just not directly... Just one paycheck at time.

At DL an employee can ride non-rev in a 1st class seat for no additional fee. At AMR you pay a segment fee per flight, depending on flight distance, for your first 5 years. Once you hit 5 years you don't pay for coach anymore, but you do pay for 1st or business class until 15 years (if memory serves me right, I may be incorrect on the 15 year number).

Is the average segment fee cost high?

Not really, but if you commute for those first 5 years it can add up. I think ORD-MSN was like $15. But if you do that 2 or 3 times a week, every week, it adds up. Especially when you only make $11k a year. :/

I was fortunate that by the time I was seriously commuting at AA I had my 5 years in, so it didn't cost me anything to commute out to NY to work. I felt bad for my recalled classmates who weren't company transfers and did have to pay to commute.
