Looks like it was a brake failure with the mechanics on board.

ATLANTA --
Authorities say a jet sustained significant damage when it rolled of a taxiway at the world's busiest airport in Atlanta.
Delta Air Lines spokesman Eric Torbenson tells The Associated Press mechanics were testing the engines of the Boeing 737 when they experienced a problem with the braking system around 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says there were no passengers aboard the aircraft and no injuries were reported. Bergen says the jet rolled off the taxiway on the east side of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. She wasn't aware of any effect on airport operations as of 6 a.m.
Torbenson says the jet sustained "significant damage."

Out of curiosity, what are the rules with regard to MX operating an aircraft? Do they have to have at least a PPL or something to taxi it? Just curious.

No, they do not need to be pilots to be taxi qualified.

And then depending on the local airport authorities, that taxi qual may or may not mean anything. Our guys couldn't taxi for mx work, would need to be tugged. Other airlines could.

That had to be quite a ride going over the embankment!

That picture is unfortunate in so many ways:
  • Looks like mx tried to run the 737 over square.
  • Good news, on the ground those winglets help their steering stability, to go right over the hill.
  • Speaking of hill, this mx taxi had a flight plan of over the hill and through the woods, to grandmothers discount MRO.
  • I bet you the sink rate alarm went off.
  • They should have used the spoilers, obviously.
  • The reversers are stowed, didn't try hard enough.
  • Why aren't the slides deployed? Would have been the right time to test them.
  • They obviously were testing the flaps too, hence when they pulled them up, the brakes failed. That's why you never take out your flaps on landing!

What was the weather like? Looked like low vis. But the media always need someone to blame so let's start a list.
Let's blame:
Darn regional pilots
Obama
The GOP
Outsourcing
Unions
Non-unions
My dog
ATC not watching the aircraft
Dougie Taylor
Gas prices
-did I leave anything out?

Not my fault! I just woke up. Hell, I haven't even taken my morning poop yet, BRB.

At Eagle in ORD we had some mechanics who were taxi qualified, but were not pilots. Sometimes they taxied planes to/from the hangar, and sometimes the crew coordinator would drive pilots out to the hanger to taxi, it depended on the mechanics' workload if they had time to taxi or not.
