UND Partnership with ASA & Delta

Don't do it.

Que?

As I understand it, the job with ASA is guaranteed if you meet their standards (including working as a CFI for UND). You are also guaranteed an interview at Delta after a few years working at ASA. I think it is a great program for lots of students here who can't wait to be hired at a regional. I might sign up but I think I would rather do something, er, interesting after college.

Lol. Almost like a Flow... well God knows what that mean, ASA will be given to Pinnacle soon, they'll have to do it soon because we're about to sink. Tie your lines to this boat gentlemen and ladies, no faster way to the bottom of the Ocean. Come one come all!

You can get to ASA a lot faster without having to slog through 500 dual given at UND first...

I feel that they would honestly try to prevent people from doing that when they know that the program is in place. You are gonna need the hours from somewhere. Lets not forget about the new ATP ruling.

How many years will it take from putting pen to ink to start the program, to graduating, to completing their requisite CFI time, to getting hired? Nothing is guaranteed in the airline business. Besides, if you're going to be training to work for a specific company, you're an asset to that company as soon as you sign the dotted line and should therefore be thought of as such (re: compensated). Guaranteed interview with Delta? Hah, by the time you have enough hours for that some bean counter in the front office will have figured out a way to make it more efficient (and somehow legal) for the whole thing to disappear.

How poorly does UND pay flight instructors? As poorly as most places, or slightly less poorly?

Its actually not too bad, the only trouble is finding work during No-fly november. Contrary to popular belief the higher-ups don't go around looking for ways to screw their CFI's, but rather help them out (additional compensation as a start).

ATP rule isn't in place for F/O's, its been dropped to 700 hours TT. Average just a little over 200TT coming out of CFII and you can see where the 500 Dual comes in.

I wouldn't count on anything with that these days until its written in ink under Part 121.

This might be a harbinger of things to come. This is like a self-funded Ab-Initio program. It guarantees UND a steady supply of CFIs and ASA of first officers who will be "company men" for fear of being kicked out of the program and having the Delta interview taken away. What better way for management to control pilots? By offering the ultimate of carrots (Delta interview) they gain a docile pilot who will do anything to keep his interview.
