Boeing Tour at PAE

Had the opportunity to take a tour of the Boeing factory at Paine Field yesterday. Really incredible to see just how large that factory/hangar is. Story is when they first built it that condensation developed "rain clouds" in the ceiling that would periodically rain down on the workers. They since have installed a ventilation system that eliminated that problem.

Saw the 2nd ANA 787 being flight tested, and about 3 other 787's being readied for paint. Inside the hangar they had 4 787's being built including United's first one.

Also saw an ME-262 departing as we were starting the tour.

Pretty enjoyable day.....

Yeah the tour is amazing. Highly recommended to everyone, even those without an interest in aviation as much as we have.

Were you at Paine field or Everett? When I went to Everett a few weeks ago thats where they were building the 787s (Uniteds 1st I believe was 2nd in line?) It was sweet cause ANA's numero uno was there!

Same place I think......pretty neat seeing the 787's.

ooops lol yeah same place! I got confused because its Boeing Field (BFI) in Seattle and I thought Everett was just called Everett field!

So let me get this straight. You did a tour of a Boeing production facility, and there are no pictures in this thread? Tisk tisk.

Last time I was there, the 787s on the line all had a layer of dust, no engines, and there were about a million engineers trying to fix what they screwed up the first time.

I'm curious to see if the reason they told you about the no cameras/ cell phones is the same as mine?

Apparently someone dropped a large camera on the wing of a 747 and not only did it do $300,000 (could have been lower but thats what I thought they said) in damage but it made the airline upset because they had to wait a few extra months for delivery because of the repair.

Interesting.....I hadn't heard that story. I can see the reasoning behind it though. I'll bet it could be even more expensive if it involved a composite 787 wing.

They didn't allow camera's, or cellphones on the tour.......It's a shame, I know!

One thing I couldn't figure out was the no cmaeras policy for Air Force One at the Regan Library. Gimmie a break, the thing is retired, and all the stuff has probably been well upgraded since that airplane left service.

In regards to AF1, doesn't flash photography have adverse effects on some things over time?

And in addition to the story you were told about someone dropping a camera on a 747, which I guess is plausible but you never really get so close that you overhang a wing, at least from what I remember of being on the tour in 2008, but also Boeing is doing it has a corporate security measure. They don't want other companies taking high resolution photos of productions methods, pre-production parts, etc...
