Who's Gonna Watch Pan Am?

If this is what you're talking about, it's actually fairly accurate representation of the turbojets used on the 707 at the time.

HAHA, I love it when someone gets OWNED like that! A good own'ing makes for a good morning!

And to the guy who made the comment about topgun... yeah the acting and scenes on the ground may be cheesy, but I had a boss once who was an A4 and Harrier pilot, and he said that the action sequences are actually fairly reallistic, moreso than any other airplane movie he'd ever seen.

I just hope it isn't like Airport '75... great movie, but far from realistic. I think that they will put a fair amount of historical and technical accuracy into it.
I'll give the first episode a watch.

I think I might watch it tonight, not too sure. More or less because I'm a fanboy of Terminal 3 for obvious reasons (I work there!)

Quick trivia which wasn't answered on Segaloff's Facebook page: What does Pan Am and Star Trek have in common?

I'm not in the States right now so I won't be able to watch it, but the articles about it say that they've gone to extraordinary lengths to get it 'right'. That they want to create that Mad Men-style period aura, and that it's the details that really do it. Some discussion about how they created the tableware and interiors as copies from the originals at one Pan AM freak's personal collection. As has been mentioned, the concept and production for the series is from an actual former Pan Am stew, and is based on the stories of several era Pan Am stews that she worked with.

I share the cynicism that many of you have, but it would be nice to see something that shows the airline industry (even if it's only the legacy of the airline industry) in a positive light.

There's a Grand Canyon's worth of difference between "more realistic than any other movie" and "fairly realistic"!

I don't find any of the aerial sequences in Top Gun to remotely resemble any type of actual air combat in any way.

Oh come on, bro.

You KNOW you tried the "We'll put on the brake and he'll fly right by!" during your first ACM encounter! And your back seater kept yelling "Woooo! Hacker! Shake 'n BAKE!" :)

Planeologist -- you made a lot of us feel old.

There's talk about a public flogging then a permanent ban. What say you? :)

When I was younger, my brothers managed to suspend me in the air by hanging me from a doorknob by my undies. So I say do your worst Doug Taylor.

You do know that my mod croanies are cops, combat veterans and other creative types, yes? :)

Naw, aren't those exhaust thingies cool looking? They always reminded me of space ships and how back in the 1970's, I expected to be flying something trans-sonic by the time I was 40.

But crap, what do we have? Riced-out 40 year old 737's and plastic versions of a modernized version of an existing airframe. Me = Cheated! :)

I'm into old stuff enough that the 737 is still a quite appealing airplane.

And, the airplane that (it looks like) I'll never get to fly still captivates my imagination:

The thing still looks like a space ship, I think.

I thought hair replacement options would be more advanced than they are now, but sadly I was mistaken.

Also...
Now I know that when I am getting a seat on a 73R that the R denotes Riced-out.

Quick trivia which wasn't answered on Segaloff's Facebook page: What does Pan Am and Star Trek have in common?
Gene Roddenberry was a Pan Am pilot! I don't think he advanced beyond Second Officer, though. He was also a WWII bomber pilot and a San Fransisco cop. That dude is a role model to me, he got to do three things that I have wanted to do since I was a kid: be a pilot, be a cop, AND use his imagination to make money.
I read in Robert Gandt's book Skygods that apparently back in the Pan Am flying boat days, the Captain sat behind the two "helmsmen" up front and did very little actual flying. Apparently that's why Roddenberry imagined the Captain of the Enterprise as doing very little actual hands on control and serving in a more administrative role, sitting behind the helmsmen. Although I remember one episode of Next Generation (when Gene Roddenberry still had some creative control over the show) where Picard hand flies the Enterprise out of some trap or the other, remarking how far they've come in terms of automation but yet humans are never out of the equation completely. One of my favorite quotes from the series comes from that episode (heavily paraphrased): "Imagine only a single propeller keeping a rickety vessel in the sky, those were the days." *ahem* /end nerdy posting:o

I would like to fly it too but for me the one I'd really like to have flown is:
