The infamous "pilot shortage" again...

What? No one posted the USA Today front page?

OMG PILOT SHORTAGE!!!!!!!!

I'm sure I missed the thread somewhere.

Re: Obviously I can't find the thread on this...(USA TODAY!@

wonder how much ERAU paid for that to be printed

Re: USA Today Article- Demand for airline pilots

Has it been five years yet? :)

"It is a dramatic turnaround," says Louis Smith, president of FltOps.com, a website that provides career and financial planning for pilots. "Pilot hiring was severely depressed in the last three years. The next 10 years will be the exact opposite, with the longest and largest pilot hiring boom in the history of the industry."

Kit Darby? :) ("buy my products!")

To think that I almost didn't post, just assuming that this MUST have been posted somewhere. And I'd have lost out on being the Father of one of the most epic threads EVAR. There's a lesson here, kids. But in the meantime: LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

What's the over/under on thread length?

Re: Obviously I can't find the thread on this...(USA TODAY!@

I was wondering what was taking so long for any thread to show up on this! I knew about it at 5:30 this am....

Re: Obviously I can't find the thread on this...(USA TODAY!@

I have 14 DUIs in the last week but I went to ERAU and ATP, so I should be good, right? Should I bother applying to the regionals, or just go straight to Southwest captain?

With that record, you're straight to Chief pilot at Northwest.

The supply of pilots is here, it's just that they don't want to pay the price! :)

I love sorbet (lactose intolerant I am). But I'm not going to leave my job to go scoop sorbet for $5/hr.

Now if they paid $40/hr to scoop sorbet, that would be a worthwhile second job.

I really agree with that. The problem is that it requires 10 years + commitment at a low QOL to make it to decent jobs. I wanted to go UAS but the market is looking for 15+ year pilots or very high contact pilots right now. I have a few contacts that could get me in, but those jobs are now at a low pay as well.

If the pay began to rise to where a decent quality of life can exist again, I would probably come back. For now, the railroad has given me that QOL and the pay.

All it will take is one fuel shortage or one terrorist attack and this will all be gone for 10 years again....

The industry will just shrink to meet the needs of the economy.

I'm in the same boat. Young kids, and crappy QOL and pay sent me back to HVAC. Now if things really did turn around, and regional pay came close to what I make now, I may consider going back to flying. But I hesitate because I know that if good times come again, the downswing is only a few short years away.

That's why you have to really take the "thar's a shortage" coming with a grain of salt, ESPECIALLY when it's spoken by people with a financial interest.

I'm sure he's an honorable guy, but there's a reason why they always go to the Kit Darby's and FlightOps people for "shortage quotes". The columnist gets the quote he wants and their business gets more customers.

Kind of why smitten women love Gloria Allred! :)
