Why aren't more women airline pilots?

(CNN) -- It's a familiar ritual of flying -- that moment when you're buckled into your seat and the cabin's loudspeakers come to life with a voice that says, "Hello, this is your captain speaking. Welcome aboard."
But how many times in your travels has that voice belonged to a woman?

For most fliers, the answer is never or very few.

Most women I know are smart enough to stay out of aviation. ;)

Come fly Expressjet out of IAH (soon going to chicago), seems like every FO is a female.....

Well they did have a new hire class that was all female.

From my ramp days XJT definately had the most female pilots, (over Comair, ASA and pinnacle)

Hate to buy into the stereotype, but most women arn't too good at driving so one thing doesn't lead to another in most cases

IF I were a woman, I'd sit at home and take advantage of rich guys who are stupid with their money for a living :)

Be careful or you'll get shot.

I'd have to partially agree with him... Granted I'm only 16 and obviously there are acceptions. (You) But riding with girls my age, and even their parents has me grabbing the Oh handle for most of the ride.

You should have ridden with me at 16 years old. I still scare myself thinking about the stupid stuff I did.

All the female pilots I know are either still flight instructing or are corporate.

My wife is also a commercially rated helicopter pilot. She gave everything up to have a baby and be a SAHM. Of course, I had to do the same also in order to bring in some actual money. I couldn't imagine putting my family through the FO pay at a regional right now. Some people can do it though... my hat goes off to them.

Traditionally, women have stayed away from roles that required extensive travel. Hard to be a "good mom" when you're on the road at least four days a week. As we're all aware, men aren't held to the same standards. A few studies have been done related to female politicians - who have traditionally tended to have either no children, or children who were grown and out of the household before entering politics.

With age of first marriage increasing, as well as the age in which women have their first child - it's not surprising that a lot of women in their early 20s are starting to get into aviation. I think the prospects for them staying in aviation are probably statistically less, however.

I havn't done anything stupid, can't afford paying a higher car insurance payment and flying...

Some of my friends on the other hand, have numerous tickets. (Of course their parents pay for gas and insurance though)

+1 on the Mom thing - brutal business and many don't want to accept it over motherhood. Physician is a similarly brutal experience for a woman (family, etc) and can be a deterrent to women entering that profession.

Any idea where those rich guys can be found? ;)

More wemon aren't airline pilots for the same reason most aren't infantry. They simply just don't want to do it.

Yeah, girls are always the ones doing careless things and with higher insurance rates.

Recently I read a story about a guy causing a disturbance on a plane because the pilot was a female. He caused such a problem he had to be removed from the flight.

Seriously.....some people....

The military did some studies not long ago that proves Women can pull more G's than men in fighters.
