Today's my birthday. I'm just hanging out, but I believe I am ready to take my instrument written. I have taken 5 practice exams with: 90%, 77%, 85%, 93% 78%

I feel like I could pass and have not failed a practice test in months. My concern is I'm not as confident in certain subjects like navigation with ADF's and such.

Should I just go and get her done right now?

Thanks

Simply spend a day or two reading all the material you can get your hands on in the weak areas you had on practice tests. I've been told time and time again by many Designated Examiners that the better you do on a written, the easier your oral exam will be. Make the oral easier and put in a bit more effort.

The above link is for an ADF sim.

Good luck

You're probably in better shape than I was when I took mine and I passed no problem

For some reason, while I was studying, every time an ADF question came up my brain said "My plane doesn't have one of those." and skipped it... then I felt real stupid when I sat down for the test.

First, happy birthday, OP. Here's to many more.

:yeahthat: It's a little silly, isn't it?

Also, as G4 said, the higher your written score, the easier the oral will be. It's entirely up to you, but if you feel confident, do it.

When I did my private test, I had NO desire to learn about the ADF. I automatically skipped those questions and didn't even study them and still scored in the mid 90's. Of course, I think the IR would have more questions on it, but if there is an area that I *know* I won't use or is of too much concern to the DPE, then I wouldn't sweat it too much. I know...I am an underachiever.

I think you neeed to head down to that place called the aiiirrporrt and geterrrrrrrdone....goodluck, happy birthday bud

If you have to come on here and ask if you're ready, then you're probably not ready. The scores don't worry me, it's the lack of confidence in your abilities and how that may relate to you choking on a written. Take today off, go get hammered. Sleep in till 4pm to work off the hang over, and then start prepping back up. When YOU feel ready, is when you go take the test.

O yeah, Happy B-Day!

Take the test this morning. You'll pass, then enjoy the day. Tomorrow work on studying for the practical test.

I don't think that's the case here. There are lots of folks out there that get test jitters even when well prepared for the test. If the OP is scoring as well on the practice tests as he/she says, then they are ready to knock it out. If in doubt, while taking the test, answer the questions that you are reasonably sure you know the answer to then come back to the more challenging ones. You may surprise yourself how many you will know. Besides, the test questions are PUBLISHED!!! FAA knowledge exams are one of the easiest tests to pass EVER!!!

One other hint: For the questions you aren't *sure* about, just highlight them in your test study guide and review them for a couple of days before the test...you just might remember the answers! :)

Last week I had a 17 year old female student who came to me and told me she wasnt ready for her private written test. She wanted to cancel it after she already scheduled it yet I encouraged her to take it. She got 100%

I believe in instructing students to have some self confidence in their abilities instead of relying on you to hold their hands. It's not the score I'd be worried about it's just breaking the lack of self confidence in his/her abilities. I realize we're talking about a written but when that engine stops when it isn't supposed to, you need to feel confident in your abilities w/o anyone there to hold your hand.

Edit: Two 70 percentish tests in the last couple of practice tests isn't acceptable in my book for a sign off. I don't need perfection but if you get a crappy test bank plus some testing nerves, a 75 percent goes to a 68.

When I took my private written my CFI said not to even worry about the ADF questions. There's a lot more of them on the instrument written though. However... I've had a few CFIs tell me "I don't even know how to use that thing." Hopefully they were joking. I know they're not that common anymore, but really, there's no excuse for not knowing at least the basic principles of it. The needle points off the nose. Always. If you have a left wind correction angle, the needle is going to be deflected slightly to the right even if you're tracking the same course. If you have the Instrument Flying Handbook, look at the section on ADF. It actually explains it very well.

I am kinda neutral on the ADF thing. Personally, I am not going to get myself into the situation that I would *have* to use an NDB approach. I think it would be mighty tough to stay proficient in it for my kind of flying. Now of course if you're a -135 guy flying some pretty antiquated equipment, you most likely don't have a choice. I think that the ADF is going the way of the slide rule and manual E6B anyway and the VOR is going to be close behind!

Below are some previous results. I also have pilotprep on my iphone and Dauntless IR software on my laptop so this doesn't show all the results. It is missing the 78% and 77% that I got.

Take the test. Have a good birthday. Last long time. Those are fine. The written was almost always easier than the practice tests for some reason.

Those are all good scores. I prepared for mine like crazy and got an 87%. It's way tougher than the Private written that's for sure. Some of the stuff on there is probably stuff that never really comes up other than on the test anyway.
