Delta firms up plans to install Wi-fi on regional jets
By Lori Ranson

Delta Air Lines plans to expand its onboard Internet service supplied by Gogo to 223 regional jets operated by its Connection Carrier partners.

The decision follows a disclosure by Delta to ATI and Flightglobal in August of this year that the carrier was giving serious consideration to offering Wi-fi on its larger 70-plus seat regional aircraft featuring two-class cabins.
Installations of equipment to support Wi-fi on the regional jets is scheduled to begin in January, and should be complete by year-end 2011, says Delta.

Atlanta-based Delta completed Gogo installations on its mainline domestic fleet earlier this month, and once the carrier completes equipping the 223 regional jets, Delta will offer Wi-fi on 772 aircraft.

Introducing Wi-fi is the latest enhancement Delta has announced to create seamless service between mainline and connection flights. Other product improvements include offering a first class cabin to 66 Bombardier CRJ700s, introducing a meal service in first class on regional jets and expanding the number of jetbridges at hubs to decrease ground-level boarding on regional jets.

Just a pre-warning: don't even dream of using it while you're working.

Huggy Bear says word on the street is that some folks may have gotten busted being online when they were supposed to be flying.

Don't be that guy.

Because your internet friends will tease and speak ill of you.

(Any of you guys even know remember/know who Huggy Bear is? You know, Starsky and Hutch before Owen Wilson wrecked the franchise beyond repair?)

It would be kind of nice to be able to access ground based weather radar in flight. I think JetBlue has something like that set up for their flight crews via the directTV link. It's sad that a 172 with a G1000 has better in flight big picture weather data than we do.

Also, glad to see they aren't adding this to the 50 seat fleet which is already weight restricted enough of the time.

The word I got about how these highly intelligent individuals got busted for accessing the wifi at work is beyond the realm of stupid in my book! But I'll save that for another conversation. :)

Before I worry about the computer weather via wifi, I just want an altitude leveling autopilot and a ground speed readout!! :D

Hey... you rolled the dice, made it to the big show and got stuck flying a dinosaur. I'm tempted to feel bad for you, but I just can't do it. :D

The 9 was my first jet... and will always be my one true love. We didn't have whatever that fancy computer is by the F/Os left knee... that must be new. Sure do miss that airplane.

Odd timing what with the Tubby Stackers talking about WiFi being a potential threat to travel safety (via remotely-operated devices or somesuch poo-poo).

WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

Isn't the seat pitch on an RJ less than a larger plane? Just seems like trying to use a laptop would be a little tricky.

I transitioned to the MD-88/90 back in August.

Nice!

I miss the NW freighters up here. The ramp is so deserted. Atleast the hangar is being put to good use. It is full of Beech 1900s and Dash-8s.
