November 29 Stans Class

Hi everyone,
I just recieved an e-mail inviting me to the Nov 29 Stans class, however I have not even recieved a phone call so I'm just wondering if I'm supposed to just show up (I've sent an e-mail for clarification). I read the posts about stands and I don't believe it will be a problem, especially with 1500 hours in the Archer, but I do have a few questions. I think I will be starting part-time as I am 20 hours short on the instrument requirements for the full time position.
1. How many students can I realistically expect starting off?
2. What program do start out in, is it teaching local students, foreign, do I have to go out and find students etc.?
3. Is there room for advancement, or are all the upper positions (Check instructor, assistant Chief, Muti-instructor) filled with lifers?

I have a full time instructor gig right now but it is strictly JAA and I am in the VFR, single engine piston program. I would like to teach instruments, fly at night and do some multi-engine instruction as well this year so I guess my biggest question is that a possibility at FSA.
Thanks in advance and I look forward to potentially meeting some of you guys.

1. Probably two students but there will be more before too long. Everyone usually starts out with two to get their feet wet. After a few weeks you should get more students.
2. Most likely a Chinese program.
3. There is room for advancement. Like any job, you have to pay your dues. Be sure to let management know your future plans. To make you a check airman or Program Manager, they want to know that you are not going to leave for a long time.

With your experience, it shouldn't take too long to become a full time instructor. You have a CFII and MEI, right? The more ratings, the better your chances of moving up quicker.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for answering. I do have my CFII and MEI. Do they let us take our students through instrument and multi or is it strictly private pilot to start?
Thanks.

Short answer: Yes. However, there is a benefit to having an instructor change. You have to first be instrument and multi-engine standardized. Those classes are run only on an "as needed" basis.

I'll be down there for the standardization class on the 29th as well! What are you doing for housing? I'm having a hard time finding a place that doesn't require a year long lease.

Check out The Fairways, Walker Woods, or Canterbury Place. Walker Woods has short term leases.

I can give you the number of my former landlord who maintains several rentals in the area. He likes working with FlightSafety students/instructors and has no lease terms, just verbal month to month.

I'll check out Walker Woods for sure. Blizzue could you PM me that phone number? Thanks to you both for being so helpful.

Fairways is a nice place, I lived there for some time, most places there have a one year lease, the only ones that don't have it are the furnished units, but they are more expensive. After our lease was over the guy made it month to month and paid for the furniture we had. If I would go back I would probably rent a house or some place by the beach, Fairways has a nice pool but most of the time I would drive to south beach (15 minutes away) anyway, all grocery places were far, I know now they have a Walgreens and a CVS right behind the corner, sucks anyway before they had a dirt cheap driving range in place of them..was nice to go there after work.

Canterbury Place is nice too, I considered going there, close to the school and really cheap, but I just didn't like the area (floods) and there was no units available, a friend of mine use to have a bed room in one of the two bedroom units for 350 a month (with utilities).

For me Walker Woods was just too far from the Beach....

I live in Walker Woods. Here are my thoughts.

Pros: 1)Well kept and good maintenance.
2)Quiet neighborhood (for the most part)
3)Utilities are fairly cheap. My unit faces away from the sun and it's downstairs.
4)Garages are available if you need one.
5)Only 3 miles from the airport. I average an 8 minute drive to work door to door.

Cons: 1) The walls are fairly thin. You can even smell the cooking coming through the walls.
2) They are very strict about not grilling outside your apartment. You have to use the ones they provide. (I love to grill.)
3) It's not one of the cheapest places. A 2 bed 1 bath downstairs will cost about $820. It's not bad if you have a roommate.
4) It is about 15 minutes from the beach and many of the nicer restaurants.

I have been here for over 2 years and have nothing really bad to say about it.

I also lived in Canterbury Place during my first tour of duty here at FSA. Nice place, but not the best neighborhood. The property manager is very nice and accommodating. I liked the layout of the buildings but the interior left a lot to be desired.

At Fairways no grilling at all, if you live at last floor you may be able to have a gas or an electric one and grill without being noticed. We use to go to the park by the beach or at the Veterans Island and just do our BBQs there.

$820 is on the expensive side, at Fairways you can get a furnished 2 bd for that.

Had a friend living close to Canterbury Place, during FAY the water was at the doors.

Keep in mind that everything east of US1 is evacuation zone, most old buildings west of US1 have to be evacuated too. I use to live east of US1 and during FAY my car got flooded.

Any word on how big the class is going to be? I heard that they originally wanted 15, then lowered it to 12 and so far only have 5 responses. Guess people don't want to move across the country for what we get paid.
My advice for anyone choosing to come here ... if PTN is offered to you it would be a good choice. Those of us that are in the Chinese programs are hurting, the work is very inconsistent and almost no one makes 35 hours a week.
As far as where to live, make sure to shop around and take your time. There are countless places within a few miles of the airport, guess it just depends if you want to be close to the beach or work. Also Florida state law also requires that any lease of 6 months or less has you paying a hospitality tax which I believe is close to 10%.
Any more questions feel free to post them.

To any potential incoming IP'S that need a place to live...I have lived in Canterbury Place for the past month and will be leaving for greener pastures next month(12/16). The lease is in my roommates name, however, he will be leaving the same date as me, so he would like to find people to fill it. He is offering to pay for the remainder of December's rent and the 200 dollar security that is required for signing the lease. Utilities run on average between 150-200 a month and there is a 300 dollar deposit required to get Vero Beach Utilities. If you're interested, PM me and I will let you know the details.

Hey guys! I too received the email for the 11/29 standards class but like rockman I havent heard from anyone over at FSA, I've tried calling but no one ever returns my calls. Does anyone know what time we have to be there on the 29th?

I just got a email too! Anyone know how long it takes to get standarized? They said 30 hours but how many days? Also do they still get a pretty good number of students? I am worried about moving then making no money

It depends what you are being standardized for. I've heard the majority will go to PTN. Thier standardization is 30 hours ground plus 15 hours flight/frasca. It will take 2 or maybe 3 weeks. During stanz the pay will suck but after you will be able to bill close to full time. The problem being is that you won't get any multi time with PTN.

the 141 stan I don't really remember , its been a while. maybe 3-4 days of class plus 1 VFR and 1 IFR flight. It will probably take 2ish weeks. If they put you right into multi stan after then 3 or so more class room days plus 2 VFR flight/frasca and 2 IFR flight/frasca. This would add 2ish more weeks but you would have students after finishing single engine stanz.

Good luck.......
