Question for the Pinnacle guys

Exactly like a sitation the other day I had in MEM except the CSA was willing to sacrifice customer service to avoid getting in trouble for a delay.

Here's the story: Short turn between out and backs and had to go from B19 to A21. Wasn't hungry, made a quick pit-stop, and made the LONG walk to A21, and check in with the CSA right about 30 prior. Conversation went something like this:

CSA: Hi there! Here's your paperwork. F/A's already down at the plane-She'll be ready to board 2 min after you get down there.

Me: Great...Is the CA down there as well?

CSA: No...he hasn't checked in yet.

Me: Oh...Well, if he hasn't checked in yet, lets hold up on boarding until he does check in.

CSA: (worried look on his face) Uhh....we can't do that....

Me: Uhhh...Yes, we can. We don't know how long the CA is going to be. It could be 2 min from now or 2 hours from now, and I'd rather have passengers sitting up here waiting on him rather than being cramped on the plane. Lets give if it a minute or two and if he's still not here I'll call crew scheduling.

CSA: Uhhhh...ok....Are you willing to take the delay?

Me: Absolutely

CSA: (suprised look on his face) Oh okay....

Turns out that the CA walks up within the next minute or two, and the flight goes out on time. But it still makes me p*#&ed that our CUSTOMER SERVICE agents refused to use some common sense....

I've had the same thing happen a time or two. Once I had a CSA fly off the handle on me wanting to hold off on boarding until we had some idea where the captain was.

What I mean is can you guys see all the inbound flight info(OOOI). When I am waiting for a CA I tell the FA to wait for their flight to be IN if the gate is a good bit away and ON if they are parking close by.

I guess that would work in most situations assuming you know where the crewmember is coming from. Do Eagle's releases have the upflight numbers for all working crewmembers on them somewhere? The only way we can find out where the other guys are coming from is to call scheduling and ask.

It is listed on the NS in DECS.

Yeah, we can only get the inbound flight number if we call scheduling. Even then, barring logging into a CSA terminal, the only monitors with arrival info are right outside of security and just inside the B security checkpoint. Our ACARS won't give us arrival times for other flights, either.

And Kev, I heard ya on the customer service thing. I've just started calling our people "agents." There's no customer service to be had, so we should change their titles to ODAs, on-time departure agents. We showed up at the gate yesterday 25 minutes prior to departure.....no gate agent. Got someone to verify us on the crew list so we could go down to the plane, and there's our gate agent half way down the jetbridge on her cel phone. Technically, we were five minutes from the time we were supposed to be boarding, and she already had at least 4 or 5 people that needed to have issues worked out.

Even when she got off her cell phone, it still seemed that doing her job wasn't even important to her... You still had to go up and tell her to board the airplane.

HA! Mine yesterday was from B19 to A17. That is a LONG walk.

We were given logins for the gate computers to access SHARES. Most people have no clue how to do it, but a few of us actually use them from time to time to check passenger totals or get a gate listing for our next flight (or print out our paperwork if all of the gate agents are off on a smoke break).

That would be giving the pilots too much information. Management likes to think of us as mushrooms if ya know what I mean.

So how do you know when your plane is due in or if there has been a gate or plane swap?

If you're flying the airplane in, that's all good. You can get that stuff over ACARS or the scheduled in time is on the release. If you're waiting on an inbound.....you really don't know. Most of the time, if there's a plane swap, we're the last to know. I've been standing around and seen passengers get up and go to another gate. Someone saw it change on a monitor somewhere, but no one told the gate agent, let alone the flight crew. I've been sitting on an airplane on a MX delay, gone back up to the gate and seen no one there. Turns out they canceled the flight a half hour earlier and neglected to tell the crew.

I've been sitting on the plane waiting to board passengers when another crew comes on board and tells us that we were swapped 20 minutes ago and wondering why we were still there...

All goes back to that mushroom thing

Best way to find out when an inbound will arrive is FlightAware.

Hey, wait a second....that sounds like our management.

Oh wait..... ;)

Apparently our operations were meant for each other. "Simply the Best!"

True story, i was with Cruise in our crew room, and we had Continental Red Coats come beat on our door to tell us our plane was fixed and they were waiting on us. Nobody let us know....

So how do you know when your plane is due in or if there has been a gate or plane swap?

"Ops, gate check for 5784 to Columbia."

"5784 Columbia, Ship 830 out of C22B, 830 inbound from Columbus 1815"

Or ACARS at ASA - excuse me - Atlantic Southeast.

What's funny is flying into IAD when you call on ops to get a gate they tell you what your ship number is...even though you're already on it.

Saw this down in ops tonight while sitting Ready Reserve...

What? You didn't get your t-shirt right after the merger with that on it? My wife wears mine when she mows the yard. I got two of them, but I think the other one is cut into strips to clean up cat yack in the floor......

I understand that if something were to break in the future that they have already fixed it. Actually, that sounds familar dealing with Mesa maintenance control:

"Nose wheel steering doesn't work."
"We fixed it."
"...yeah, but it doesn't work."
