Signature of Qualifications - Go or no go?

I personally think it's a bit flashy myself. A couple years ago when flightlogg.in came out, I noticed a lot of people liked to have that in their signiture. To me, that's more like, "Hey look at me."

Dude, you're Macgyver, you should put that in your sig!

It was something Ian suggested a couple years ago. For a good period, alot of us were doing it. I dunno why it stopped or started. At the time, it seemed the conclusion was mixed, but alot of folks had started doing it. I am thinking I will stop as I like to go with the flow as much as possible. I was just curious on what others thought about it now.
I pretty much gave up on it... we still have plenty of blowhards who hide behind their screen name and don't give a clue to who they are or what they do.

Like Beagle said, if people are around for a while you learn more about them but some posters simply snipe and never mention their own experience. Blank profiles and mostly political posts or sniping FAR posts - you know the type.

So really, if people just want to come on here and be hard-asses with no person behind the screen name that tells me all I need to know already.

If you click the person's screen name, click "View Public Profile," then the "About Me" tab, you'll be able to see the person's certificates, ratings, etc. No need for a separate signature in my mind.

Only if they fill it out. ;)

Like "The Life" said, it is probably a good idea just to put the stuff in the about me tab. I always felt people did as a way to show where they were in the training/cfi process. Once you get all the ratings and are flying turbine/jet stuff, does it really matter anymore?

I would like to see Doug or one of the more senior pilots on this forum have a super signature line, breaking all their flight time down by aircraft, night etc, like some people do on here, it would look ridiculous. Better to just put something funny up there, or have a cool avatar, like Galactus eating a low carb planet! :)

Ehh, if not caring about your qualifications is one thing, I'd prefer to skip over it on the forum...I'm way too lazy to go through all that clicking...

I have my stupid sig down there more as a "hey, this guy doesn't really know jack squat...but at least he has a sense of humor, so carry on" type of thing.

As soon as I see something like your sig I skip over. Put something funny down there I'll read it.

It's a forum, I don't care about being professional. Unless someone wants to pay me, send me a check, you can have my professionalism, my resume, I'll even sit across from you and say I care about your opinions.

Me rikey.

Well even though the poll results are mixed, I have elected to reduce my signature. As others mentioned, if you know me, you know what I do:)

So if you look at my signature, it has a brief description of my professional qualifications. I did this as another JC member had brought up the idea of doing it a few years back. The idea was that it would immediately clue people in on who they were talking to.

Recently, I have noticed I am one of few that actually does it anymore, perhaps adding a flavor of 'arrogance' to my online persona.

So my poll would be to ask everyone here if they think it has any merit, or should it be omitted?

You know, your post brings up a real divide that I think exists between the "old school" guys and the new cats. Years ago, we took issue with folks speaking without any experience, at all, so the whole signature thing came up. I think it was a good idea.

Then some folks must have started feeling left out, because now we're "arrogant" to speak of your experience, or worse yet; you're little more than A LOWLY REGIONAL PILOT who knows NOTHING because of X reason.

Jeremy, interesting question. Apparently I have not been paying attention because now that you mention it I have not noticed that most people have gotten rid of theirs. Actually I liked yours! I was able to keep up with what was going on with you!

Oh well, I have never been one to follow the crowd, why start now:D

BTW Congratulations on the new jig, I'm Jealous:rawk:!

lol I was just Joshin ya man.

-mini

I think 'joshin'' is lowercase. Unless, long ago, there was a very inept guy named Josh who was constantly the butt of jokes, and people said "geez, you keep treatin' him like Josh... stop Joshin' him."

See how exciting my Tuesday night is?

I originally made my sig a few years ago during the fad. I thought it was a good idea then and a good idea now. I was tired of mentioning my background to people over and over during discussions. Plus I'm not witty enough to put anything creative in my sig line.

The polls show that people prefer the sig with their experience. Yet most of people posting here don't have a sig with their experience.
