Volcano Eruption Could Cost Airlines $1 Billion

I know if you're stuck in the US you're screwed, but are the airlines in Europe trying to put everyone up in Hotels or something? At any rate its crazy to see 747s, A340s, and 777s from various European Airlines shoved into every vacant corner at SFO. I wonder how long they'll sit here.

I heart Google Chrome and Google Translate. I was able to read and throughly understand that website. Those people at Google deserve every bit of the billions of dollars they make each year.

I sure hope not. It's "an act of God" after all. They have no control over it, and therfore, are not responsible. It would be a shame if they were IMHO.

So with all the ash and CO2 that the volcano is emitting, I suppose that if everyone in the world drove a Prius, it still wouldn't make a difference?

Talk about climate change going on.

IMO, we should cap and tax Iceland for this volcano eruption. But wait a minute, they're already bankrupt!

;)

Volcanos emit a lot of green house gases besides CO2, and in copious amounts compared to the darn humans (as I understand) But they had a "climate scientist" on CNN and said despite all the greenhouse gases, it should actually slow climate change due to blocking out some solar irradiation. Heck even the historians can tell you that. I remember reading once about the lack of summer in the 19th century and googled this up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer

It seems he was trying to set the stage for some global cooling before we are doomed. Not trying to pick a fight here, just what I saw.

You sayin that god erupted the volcano?

sorry, just trollin!

Don't most airlines have an "act of God" clause? If it's out of their control, i.e. a storm or, as my son says, a "baa-cane-doe" they preaty much tell you "Sorry, but umm, your effed."

It's been my experience lately that the airlines pretty much tell you that the second you print your boarding pass.

The only EU movement at SFO today was a BA 744 that got out to LHR and around 10PM another BA 744 arrived from LHR. Strange that they got to go, KLM, United, Lufthansa, Air France, and Virgin Atlantic all still have planes sitting here that haven't moved in 2 days.

It's getting ugly out there.

I've been at JFK the past few days. It looks like a refugee camp in the terminals outside security.

I bet the crews are loving this extended layover though! I saw some BA/LH crews out here in Orlando last night, they seemed to be enjoying themselves on their "day off"

Flight Bans Due to Volcanic Eruption Continue

It's getting worse, not better.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office said the amount of ash in the plume grew Saturday and that the vast ash cloud is continuing to travel south and southeast. Scientists had planned to fly over the volcano to see how much ice has melted to determine how much longer the eruption could spew ash, but the Icelandic Coast Guard said Saturday's flight had been postponed.

Aviation experts say the volcanic plume has caused the worst travel disruption Europe -- and the world—has ever seen.

"I've been flying for 40 years but I've never seen anything like this in Europe," said Swedish pilot Axel Alegren, after landing his flight from Kabul, Afghanistan, at Munich Airport; he had been due to land at Frankfurt but was diverted.

They can't even fly to the volcano to see what's happening. That is not good.

Meanwhile the tour operators are already scrubbing sightseeing flights.

This is a shield volcano, as opposed to a cone. Shields can sputter for weeks or months. This ash cloud could linger for months. And now they are saying that historical when the 'cano sputtering now erupts, an associated even bigger volcano will begin to erupt. Where's the doom....

The plane that left was the same one that landed. It diverted back to SFO.
