Polish President Kaczynski in plane crash; 87 killed

A plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife has crashed near a Russian airport, according to reports by officials.

A plane with 87 people on board, including Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski, was on a way to Smolensk, where Polish leader was going to participate on commemoration ceremonies, mourning for victims of the Katyn massacre, when Soviet troops killed thousands of Poles.

pril 10 (Bloomberg) -- Poland’s president and central bank governor were on board an aircraft that crashed in western Russia today, killing at least 132 people, media reports said.

The Polish foreign ministry confirmed that an aircraft carrying President Lech Kaczynski crashed near Smolensk, TVN24 reported. The television channel said Poland’s deputy foreign minister and deputy speaker were on board the aircraft.

Central Bank Governor Slawomir Skrzypek was also on board, bank spokesman Maciej Antes told Bloomberg in a phone interview.

Piotr Wiesiolek, a deputy governor of the Polish Central Bank, will temporarily assume the duties of bank governor, Antes said.

The Russian-built Tupolev 154 passenger plane was carrying 132 people, RIA Novosti reported.

An unidentified rescue worker told TVN24 that the plane caught fire after its left wing hit a tree around 1.5 kilometers short of the airfield’s runway in dense fog.

Sergei Antufiev, regional governor of Smolensk, said there were no survivors in the crash. “It clipped the tops of the trees, crashed down and broke into pieces,” Antufiev told Russia-24 television news network by telephone. “There were no survivors.”

Under Poland’s constitution the duties of the president will be taken over by the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Bronislaw Komorowski.

Komorowski, who is the ruling party’s candidate for president in elections due to be held later this year, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, are both travelling to Warsaw to handle the crisis.

Polish President Dead: Lech Kaczynski Dies In Russia Plane Crash, 132 Dead
JIM HEINTZ | 04/10/10 05:14 AM |
MOSCOW — Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife died Saturday along with 130 others when their plane crashed while coming in for a landing in western Russia, officials said.

The governor of the Smolensk region, where the crash took place about 11 a.m. (0700 GMT), said no one survived.

"The Polish presidential plane did not make it to the runway while landing. Tentative findings indicate that it hit the treetops and fell apart," Sergei Anufriev said on state news channel Rossiya-24. "Nobody has survived the disaster."

Rossiya-24 showed footage from the crash site, with pieces of the plane scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires burning in the woods.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, but reports said there was considerable fog in the area.

The Polish foreign ministry confirmed that Kaczynski and his wife were aboard the plane.

The head of Russia's top investigative body, Sergei Markin, said there were a total of 132 people on the plane, a Tu-154.

Kaczynski was flying to Russia for events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police in Katyn and elsewhere during World War II.

The presidential plane was a Soviet-built Tupolev TU154M, at least 20 years old. The Army chief of staff, Gen. Franciszek Gagor, National Bank President Slawomir Skrzypek and Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer were on the passenger list.

In Warsaw, Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an extraordinary meeting of his Cabinet.

Kaczynski, 60, became president in December 2005 after defeating Tusk in that year's presidential vote.

The nationalist conservative was the twin brother of Poland's opposition leader, former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

Kaczynski had said he would seek a second term in presidential elections this fall. He was expected to face an uphill struggle against Parliament speaker Bronislaw Komorowski, the candidate of Tusk's governing Civic Platform party.

According to the constitution, Komorowski would take over presidential duties.

Kaczynski's wife, Maria, was an economist. They had a daughter, Marta, and two granddaughters.

Wow, though I hate politicians RIP

I really don't like Ombudsmen that much but I certainly don't wish them into a firey mangled death in a high-energy airplane crash.

If I did, well, that's a psychiatric issue!

WOW! It's the middle of night on a weekend (in the US). My guess is that this will hit the news hard in the morning.

RIP!

The magnitude of this crash is of epic proportions.

The irony of this is also epic. VIPs and top ranking generals and elite of the Polish military and Government, on a Russian made aircraft (Tu-154), going to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn forest massacre, carried out by the Russians, crashed in the very same forests of Smolensk that the massacres took place. Tragic.

The highest ranking, and most important officials and politicians were on that flight, including military. Here is a complete list of those on the flight. Truley tragic.

A huge loss for Poland. RIP

Poland is a bright spot in Europe and a hingepoint for EU Russia ties. And a good friend to the US. Imagine the grief if we lost Air Force One. Everyone but the complete wackos would be very upset.

On the other hand, my dad flew a Tupe RT from St Petersburg to Moscow for a one day excursion as part of a baltic cruise. Right after the two Chechnyan women blew up two tupes in a terrorist attack. FWIW my dad flew dr killers for 30 yrs, but nothing bigger, said he has never been on a more dubious aircraft, nothing but rattling and ringing. No doubt this is was a wx related CFIT, but I am sure the Poles will get a Boeing or Airbus to replace.:(

"The pilot was told Smolensk airport was closed because of thick fog, according to the news agency Interfax. He was offered a choice of landing instead at either Moscow or Minsk, the capital of Belarus, but decided to continue with the original flight plan to Smolensk.

The pilot made three unsuccessful attempts to land before the crash. On the fourth try the plane fell apart, Interfax said, citing officials at Smolensk's interior ministry."

How awful for a country to lose so much of it's upper-echelon government, legislature & military in one event. :(

WOW! Seems like numerous organizations (both government and non-government) are impacted. I could only imagine what would happen in the US if the equivalent occured.

Again, RIP!

Perhaps we can learn from this that reverting to plan B or plan C may provide more favorable results than pushing plan A beyond safe limits. I am not judging the crew but preliminary information suggests that there was pressure (maybe self imposed) on the pilot(s) to land the airplane at the intended destination rather than consider other options.

A very sad day for Poland and it's people.

Everyone was on the same plane? I've worked for companies who wouldn't let two IT people ride on the same plane.

Absolutely tragic news. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and the entire country.
