Police Arrest 'Disruptive' Passenger Aboard Plane at Detroit Airport
Sunday, December 27, 2009

Police have arrested a Nigerian man who reportedly became verbally disruptive and barricaded himself in the bathroom of a Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight on Sunday.

Several police vehicles and a police command unit have surrounded a plane at Detroit's Metro Airport, after the pilot of a Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight requested emergency help.

Two sources tell Fox News that the suspect boarded a plan in Lagos with no baggage, and said the FBI has already sent an email alert to other federal agencies notifying them of the incident.

The source said the man taken into custody at the Detroit airport was a Nigerian man in his 30s. Federal officials know who the suspect is, but won't provide any more details. He allegedly barricaded himself in the plane's bathroom for an hour.

Detroit's Metro Airport spokesman John Witner said there was a report of suspicious activity on the Delta/Northwest flight 253 from Amsterdam Sunday. That is the same flight number as the flight that Nigerian man Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was suspected of attempting to blow up over Detroit on Christmas Day.

Feds are trying to determine whether there is any connection with Abdulmutallab, who was arrested on Christmas.

All 257 passengers and 12 crew have deplaned safely, said Delta spokeswoman Susan Elliott. The flight landed safely in Detroit at 12:34 p.m. Sunday.

The flight crew requested that law enforcement meet the aircraft after a passenger on the plane became verbally disruptive, said Elliott.

looks like it's going to turn out to be nothing

There are some reports suggesting that the Nigerian man may have just been a sick passenger.

The plane has been moved to a remote location at the airport so authorities can conduct additional screening, Reuters reported.

I just heard about it on the radio. Here's what CNN had (not as much):

'Disruptive' passenger prompts 2nd alert on Detroit-bound jet

Detroit, Michigan (CNN) -- A Northwest Airlines jet was met by police at Detroit, Michigan's airport after its flight crew reported a "verbally disruptive" passenger Sunday, two days after an alleged attempt to bomb the same flight, aviation officials said.

The passenger spent about an hour in the bathroom and got upset when he was questioned by the crew of the flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, according to government sources. Law enforcement agents were questioning the man Sunday.

The jet had the same designation -- Flight 253 -- as the one on which a Nigerian man is accused of attempting to set off an explosive device Friday, said Scott Winter, a spokesman for the Wayne County Airport Authority. Winter told CNN the flight "requested emergency assistance and was pulled aside upon arrival in Detroit."

The jet was taken a long distance from the terminal and "completely engulfed" by emergency vehicles and heavily armed police once it landed, said Don Graham, who was waiting for relatives to arrive at the airport.

The flight arrived about 12:34 p.m., said Susan Elliott, a spokeswoman for Delta Air Lines, which owns Northwest. The 257 passengers were allowed to leave the aircraft about an hour after the jet landed, she said.

So if the passengers were held on the plane because of something like this, would they have to pay the fine, per passenger, of that new law that came into affect for being on an airplane too long?

Good thing he didn't have his blanket in his lap during the last hour of the flight, otherwise it could have been ugly!

I can't believe they'd let ANYONE barricade themselves in the lav anymore. If the other guy had had the sense to do that...

I was told by a copilot on LuftHansa over 10 years ago while changing into my suit in the Lav
" You MUST come out- or I will Haf to go Around"

"By order of the Transportation Security Administration, effective immediately, lavatory use is no longer permitted on any flight operating to or from the United States...please allot extra potty time at the origin airport for your personal needs." Problem solved.

Wonder if the reason he barricaded himself in the lav was he was afraid he was about to be murdered... err subdued... by the passengers.

Or he ate the chicken and had to drop a deuce.

Oh, I've spent an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom, myself.

One day, I convinced myself that I'd be able to wax off a hot fudge sunday despite my slight lactose intolerance... Boooooooy was I wrong....

The worst part is that some are the girls are a little pushy with the desserts.

"Are you sure?"

"I'm sure!"

"We've got plenty!"

"No thanks, I'm good!"

"How about just a half sundae?"

"I'll clear the cockpit"

Ya they like to push the sundaes and the cookies that's for sure...on one flight from Brussels I ended up with a whole basket of cookies when I woke up...so much for that diet.

Personally I'd have no objection to mandatory all-nude flights as a foolproof security measure, PROVIDED that the passengers aren't segregated by gender. Guess I'd better hit the gym in anticipation....

Now that you mention it, Doug, I probably would be horrified and traumatized to see some of the folks who look better fully dressed having to disrobe.

You have to figure that for every Charlize Theron, there's going to be ten Ernest Borgnines.
