Military Aviation

Not upset at all, just telling it like it is. However, his commment had to be dealt with. It's just that at those websites, we are demanding and expect a little more. If one can't handle it, then don't go there. Yes, I would say the exact same thing in person...for those who actually know me, they understand just that. If someone thinks what I just said is too harsh, I'll certainly point them in the right direction in case they need tissue or some other feminine product.

No, his comment didn't have to be DEALT WITH. Answer the question or don't, but don't be a jerk. If this is the way potential recruits are treated, its no wonder the miltary is having staffing problems.

If you mean 'not coddled' and 'expected to have enough initiative to expend the effort to find out for themselves', then YES, that is exactly how potential officers and aviators are treated.

The military is not an equal opportunity employer. It helps those who help themselves. You'll find that any of us military types on here will absolutely jump backward through all kinds of hoops to help someone who has all ready gone through the effort to educate themselves (there are several guys on this board who can personally vouch for this, BTW).

The problem is when someone asks on a forum for the 3,969th time a question that has all ready been answered many times over, that could easily be answered via the most rudimentary of research skills. That is the scenario that drives the crushing to newbies that takes place on places like AirWarriors and BaseOps. Bunk wasn't being harsh -- he was being real about the environment at those sites, because that's where the real poop is. Those same questions have been asked, and answered, over and over, and there is little tolerance for people who are lazy, who pop into the forum to ask a big softball of a question, and then expect someone else to hand them the answer on a platter.

This is the same 'big boy' treatment they're going to get throughout their officer training as well as their military flying training, as Uncle Sugar does not have time nor tolerance for hand holding in the big leagues.

To be honest after reading all the replies its actually been beneficial. I am doing a lot of reading and talking to the right people. I also am starting to study for the AFOQT and will be calling units very soon. The respsonses I got helped me jumpstart the process no matter what.

The attitude over there used to piss me off, but seriously, pretty much everything has been answered. I spent literally like two weeks just reading through everything in the guard/"my chances"/pilot selection forums and had zero questions. Reading up ahead of time worked for Frog and me (knock on wood).

Same goes here - worked for me, too, although I still owe Frog and Casey a beer for my questions. Roughness can seem annoying at first, but it's better to just lurk and learn. mhcasey has a great post here on JC about applying (I know you've already found it and read it, RIGHT?). Like Hacker said above - there are plenty of military guys on these forums willing to jump through hoops if they know you've done the legwork.

Think of it this way - are you going to be the guy at 450 kts asking the IP, "Sir, which button do I press?"

Good luck on the AFOQT.

I answered the question and thus, dealt with the problem. If you can't handle it, go cry somewhere else . The OP handled it just fine, thick skinned, obviously has no issues with it. The best way to handle things like this is straight up, no BS and if it seems to harsh or jerky via the net, then this sort of venture is certainly not for them. Wait until the DI is being "harsh" with him. The IP in the back of the T-6 or T-45 is being "harsh" with him? What about when the CO or CAG is "harsh" with him? What a joke your post is.

News to me the military is having staffing problems as well being I'm in it and have heard no such thing. Matter of fact, the Air Force is letting what, 3,700 folks go soon enough? Naval Aviation is backed up, student pilots sitting for 6 months waiting to start flight school.

Truth be told, everything here on JC has pretty much already been answered too:

How can I log PIC?

Should I go to the regionals?

Why does airline pay suck?

etc, etc ad nauseum.

Kinda what I was thinking, I was under the impression that new information, or recovering old information was good for the forums.

IMO, to a point.....if something new can be added that hasn't already. But like the rest of the forum, there's so much that could be found using the search function, and generally that's the 85% solution, the remaining 15% likely being something new.

:D I find it somewhat the same as people that want new info on PFT/Gulfstream type programs, or just ask a question about them from a different angle, expecting that that might bring a different response from the general consensus.......ie- attempting to reinvent the wheel :D

It's the same as in nearly every forum section here. If there's something aviation that can be discussed, it likely already has been at some point :sarcasm:
