Garmin producing touchscreen GPS units now?

You have been able to touch the screen on the Anywhere Map ATC since it came out...rather nice.

I was aware of Anywhere's GPS units..Just saying it looks like Garmin has upped the bar in order to recapture / not lose the touchscreen insistent crowd. :)

TOUCH SCREENS SUCK.

gimme some damn buttons with tactile feedback so i can feel my way around them without totally fixating on the damn device.

absolutely hate the bendix AV8OR that is equipped in my current plane.

oh and trying to do anything on it in less than glass-smooth air... totally impossible.

I've never used one airborne, but that seems to be the common sentiment. But it just looks so darn cool!

No, it is a fully functioning glass cockpit with buttons and knobs that revolutionized the general aviation cockpit. What does this touchscreen GPS offer that isn't already available with the G1000 with a keypad...other than the touchscreen?

Same with cell phones. We've always had keypads, and all of a sudden touchscreens come along. What does the touchscreen allow you to do that a keypad and/or trackball (Blackberry) doesn't? It's purely a gimmick, aimed at selling a product to the 18 and under crowd.

I see your point, but I think you're being a little black and white about it. What it has that the G1000 doesn't is a price tag that isn't equivalent a small vehicle. Is it marketing? Yes. Am I dumping my Apple stock because they are geared at 18 and under? No.

Ok, then to compare apples to apples. What does the Aera 560 do that a 496 can't?

I'm just trying to figure out what's so "awesome" about it, other than the touchscreen, which isn't all that awesome to me.

Eh, I'll pass on a touch-screen. It drives me insane when I see fingerprints on the screen of the 496 anyways. Seems like you would be looking at the screen longer trying to make sure your hitting the right buttons, and it might not be so great in bumpy conditions either.

Man, that system looks serious! I may not own a plane, but I want one. Screw it, I'll put it in my car. :rawk:

I'd like to see something like that. Instead of a dash with your tac/speedometer, oil pressure, temp gauge and all that, just have the G3000. All the pertinent information on the left screen, moving GPS with weather on the middle screen and who knows what on the third. :D

i've got a ATC anywhere touchscreen. Never really had a problem using it while in flight, but then again, once I set up the leg I don't really touch it. It does come with a stylus, though I have never needed to use it.

Biggest draw back is the battery life, or lack thereof. You will definitely need to buy some sort of portable charger for it. I bought one at Fry's, the electronics store not grocery store, a while back for like 50 bucks. Maybe 40. Works pretty well.

Only reason I didn't go with Garmin was the price.
I don't remember off hand the exact comparison between the AV8OR, comparable price Garmin and the ATC btu I believe the ATC had quite a few more features.

Mine came with a charger to plug it into the accessory plug on the plane...I've never run without it.

Google Garmin G3000 :)

I think the G3000 is a good example of having a touchscreen in the cockpit as it simplifies the system compared to the G1000.

Curious. Didn't Garmin have a touch screen PDA/GPS a while ago?

Because I get this call about 6 times a day, this is what I tell people. Some things are more important than others:

Wieghs 5 ounces less (makes a difference mounted on the yoke)
Much more intuitive
Half Automotive unit(equivalent to a Nuvi)
Tap the screen and drag it around with your finger
Can be used as a mass storage device(holds microSD cards too)
Map is same size, whole screen is bigger, physically it is smaller
Built in speaker
Built in GPS antenna(high sensitivity/WAAS accuracy)
Waterproof(IPX7)
Preloaded private airports
Preloaded high and low airways
9arc-second terrain/obstacle
IFR map mode

I will say they seem to be selling pretty well at most dealers.

Hmm...mine had the wall charger and the 12 v adapter for like a car adapter or whatever. the plug in for the Cessnas where I fly are a completely different adapter.
One other thing I forgot to add is that I am unable to yoke mount due to the preexisting chart clip. Some people have gotten an extra free mount, I called and they wanted more so I just used the suction cup.
Plus there have been situations where the FAA has taken action against pilots for having yoke mounted gps.

Oh yeah, after seeing those prices, no way I would pay for a Garmin.
