If you could have any Aircraft

After the Hog, it was to this for the remaining 4 years and change. The cockpit of one, maintenance working on one. And their final disposition:
How many of those remain? I know the Air Force museum at Wright Patt has one.

When in college, I did a lot of research on this airplane and would love to fly it one of these days.

If I could have any aircraft, I'd have to choose the S-3 Viking. I can do all the mx myself even the TF-34 engines (CF-34)! I will be offering in-flight refueling specials for those JC members.;) Just call 1-888-WAR-HOOVR!:D

Sad that they're all gone!

Not really! VX-30 is using some out in Hawaii to patrol Barking Sands Pacific Missile Test range. NASA also has one at Wright Patt as a aircraft icing testbed

Oh good. I love those little planes, good to still see some around. Are VS units no more then?

That is correct. ASW duties were taken over by HS, HSL, HSM helos, and the VP's. The tanker duties went to the F-18E squardons.:(

WHAT!?!?! They're gone already? How long were they in service? It seems way too soon! That's one of the few Navy jets I love (and I'm more of a civilian kind of guy)

Funny but amid all the birds Lockheed built, few think of this machine. First flight in 1972. Funny.. various sources say because Lockheed had no experience building birds for carrier landings, LTV was contracted and used the nose gear off the A-7 and main gear off the F-8 Crusader. Now that I look at it.. seems reasonable.

The real shame is how versatile they became on their last couple of war cruises. Lots of good open source info about their work in Iraq, which had them dropping ordnance in anger among other things. The US-3 seemed like a pretty good asset, as did the ES-3. Though the last VS squadron was decomissioned somewhat recently, I hear that Pt. Mugu has a couple left for range clearing duty. As for a personal jet, can't think of too many better options out there in terms of former mil aircraft. Dual side by side controls, nice high bypass turbofans, plenty of room in the cockpit, and more than enough storage space for some weekend bags or golf clubs.

I'm not positive, but I think we made it to page 7 with no one saying SR-71. Put me down for that one. Kelly Johnson was the man.
