More Piedmont Furloughs for November 1st

I've got a feeling that even the most senior of Piedmont pilots should be looking for a departure plan.

PDT went under when they started flying tprops.

I think they were the ones with gold plastic silverware? We still have some of that at my parents place.

Had a Piedmonster jumpseater PHL to MCI that is furloughed 1 Oct. He seemed pessimistic about recall ever. Darn sorry to hear it.:(

Back in the 1960's, when they were flying 50-80 turboprops? The real Piedmont you must be referring to was the one that flew 30-40 seat recip's in the 1950's.

Quick rundown on the history of 'PIEDMONT.' The Piedmont you refer to was purchased by USair in 1989. The regional PDT that is around today is a totally different airline than 'Jet Piedmont' (jet pdt used to fly many props however such as convairs and YS-11's) we used to feed to the original PDT and ALG. PDT bought the existing regional and was then transferred to what is now USairways. Has been a wholly owned since the mid 80's.

Piedmont(original) went under when USAir won the war of bids against Norfolk Southern(who would have kept them flying as Piedmont). At that time Piedmont was looking to purchase TWA with Norfolk Southern's large cash reserves; which I'm sure would have been a better deal than what they got in the AA takeover. USAir; seeing the writing on the wall of competing against a much larger and better competator that the combined Piedmont and TWA would be, offered a bid to purchase Piedmont; even though it's aquisition of San Diego based Pacific Southwest Airlines wasn't even complete. Carl Ichon got involved to help Piedmont(he wanted to offload TWA to Piedmont) buy announcing that TWA wanted to aquire USAir. His bid got rejected by the DOT, so Norfolk Southern didn't have that ammo to block USAir's bid and didn't want to raise the bid, so Piedmont's board which was backed in a corner, took USAir's bid.

The current Piedmont was actually Henson Airlines. When they rebranded USAir as USairways the renamed all the wholly owned commuter carriers. Jetstream became PSA, Henson became Piedmont, Allegheny kept their name, and CCAir was sold off to MAG.

Both Piedmont and Pacific Southwest Airlines (originals) had very loyal employees and both had very unique corporate cultures that were decimated by USAir and it's managment vs. employees style of corporate culture.

Precisely. And the same thing with PSA.

Allegheny kept their name.

Actually ALG adopted that name when US Air bought the wholly owned commuters and decided to keep the legacy names alive. Originally it was Pennsylvania Commuter Airlines. When Suburban was about to be shut down by the FAA for violations, Penn took that over. In August, 1994 the 1900's were sold to Mesa and the Shorts were retired. The company became 100% Dash 8. That was the beginning of the crazy system of having wholly owned carriers and contract carriers.

Prior to owning commuter airlines, US Air had nine commuters operating independently as Allegheny Commuter. It was the beginning of the hub and spoke system. In August, 1989, they began operating as US Air Express. They bought Henson, Suburban, Jetstream and Pennsylvania. Suburban took on the name of Allegheny Commuter and the FAA launched an investigation of them in 1991, causing their president to resign.

time to look for new job. :(

You arent safe?

I will say one thing. With looking at the stock prices of many "key" recovery stocks it looks like things are going to be going up here on out. Now another key will be the price of oil and what happens there. As long as we dont go back to last summer levels I really would anticipate things to turn beginning of next year. I VERY well could be wrong. But I would not be surprised if that happens in early 2010. We shall see.

Hey Guys,
Im really sorry to hear that. Hopefully you will all find jobs elsewhere soon...I met a few guys with Piedmont when I was flying with PSA, top notch pilots....Good luck...
