Moving to New Jersey

Well people talk crap a lot about Arkansas too and I happen to think it's the best place on earth so I'll just decide when we get there. Still excited though! :)

In most states you couldn't use "Hop skip and a jump" and "few hours drive" in the same sentence, but yes, it does describe NJ.

The only redeeming thing I've found about being here is that you're never far from a Dunkin' Donuts.

Just out of curiousity guys, why is LA so steep on insurance? Are the insurance companies trying to recoop losses from Katrina? What were the premiums like before the storm? Just seems very high to me.

Well, from what my aunt says (she's lived in this area since before the storm) rent and insurance were extremely effected by Katrina. I don't know that it's high everywhere in the state, but it definitely is in the New Orleans area. I think car insurance and home insurance are so high because of the risk of flood. Even a heavy downpour here can flood the streets so bad you can't drive. I was about 7 1/2 months pregnant and we were coming home from a visit in Arkansas and the streets were flooded so bad we had to park our car and wade in knee high water to our apartment.
 
Half of everyone in the lines at the grocery stores here are using food stamps. It seems like half the city is on welfare but I actually don't blame them. I took a job temporarily when I first moved, but ended up staying there a year because we got pregnant. Anyways, I was working as an office manager at a flight school and only brought home about 1200 a month. I thought that was really bad pay but after talking to some other people, like the nurses at my ob's office and some secretaries at other places, I realized I made more than all of them. So you have really bad pay and high cost of living. It sucks. Apparently rent used to be really cheap here but after the storm, everything was destroyed and when people started moving back there weren't enough places to live, so they could charge what they wanted. Then as everything built back up, the prices never went down but pay didn't go up either. It sucks.
 
I just LOVE how guys who's only experience with NJ is living in a disgusting crash pad are the big experts on the ENTIRE state of NJ. :whatever: Why don't they venture out a bit and check it out instead of bashing on something they have extremely limited knowledge of? There are parts of NJ that you can't even imagine living in. Pretty ironic too in that many of the rich and famous call the Garden State home. Bruce Springsteen, John Bon Jovi, Eddie Murphy (not sure if he's still a resident) and numerous other musicians, actors, athletes, multi-millionaires, etc.

Oh and BTW, if any of you guys are into nude beaches, there's one at Sandy Hook. :D

Why in the hell a NYC girl like me is defending Joizey is beyond me....:dunno: :)

Maybe the fact that from the highest hill you can see NJ, or the fact that if you are near Arthur Kill you can throw a rock and hit NJ, or maybe its the whole Port Authority of NJ/NY, or maybe your screws are starting to loosen...:D;)

Actually, I like NJ! Frequent the beaches, boardwalks, Atlantic City, etc.. Hell, I'm thinking of moving to a condo near the beach after my girls go off to college! :beer:

Jersey is a great place to live. I moved out because at the time I was priced out of the Bergen County housing market and I needed to get away from my family for a bit.

Skiing, etc is an hour or two away in the Pocono's. Come spring, I recommend spending a day walking around New York City or Center City Philadelphia; summer time is beach time. Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant have GREAT boardwalks that your son will love! Lots of rides and of course boardwalk food. Fall is a great time to drive up through Sussex County. The foilage is unreal.

Philly will be a short drive from you as well. I'm not a big fan of the city but there are sports events, historical sights and an awesome museum.

There's lots to do though the cost of living can be prohibitive. The auto insurance is high, when I left I was 23 and paying $3800 a year for 100/300 $1000 deductible on a leased Honda Accord. :mad: The area you are living in isn't as bad and there are lower priced areas within a short drive. Good luck with the move!

Born and raised in Cape May. In my early thirties, moved just outside of Atlantic City. Then moved to Camden Co and worked there and in Sussex Co. Spent the last 5 years living and working just outside of Trenton while being married to a girl who was born and raised in Montclair so I think I'm pretty qualified to comment on the present day living the entire NJ experience thank you very much.

It's 'effing expensive to live here and while its nice to have Philly, New York, 2nd rate skiing in the Poconos and better skiing in Vermont so close, none of that keeps you warm when you're running to stand still all the time. I live here because its where I'm from, where my wife's work is right now, and where most of my family is. But if I had to move (and I may in the next year) I won't miss NJ one bit with the exception of being further away from friends and family. Bottom line: The people you see on the nude beach, are never the people you want to see on the nude beach.

When you have the income of Bruce Springsteen, anywhere can be a nice place to live.

Every NJ banner pilot knows all about that and therefore knows that every nude beach is much more of a sausage fest and cellulite fest than anyone wants to admit. Bottom line: The people you see on the nude beach, are never the people you want to see on the nude beach.
 
It doesn't matter to me whether New Jersey sucks or not, I was interested in flying opportunities. Besides, I have to go there whether I like it or not. Uncle Sam wants me there. :cool:
 
Yeah, even if it does suck, we can't really do much about it, but it seems like there are a lot of really cool things to see and places to go around there and I'm just excited to have some family close by.
 
Speaking of New Jersey, what's up with the big hair, velour zip-up jogging outfits and the girls wearing sweatpants that say "Juicy" or "Bebe" on the back. They have any idea what "Bebe" means in French?

And like, what's up with Jersey guys who crank call their homies when he's got a lady in the house? Wazzupawiddat?

If Jersey's so cool, why don't they pick up after themselves a little more. Or is that "A littah mo-WAH!"? :)

If you're going to be living near Fort Dix your options will be somewhat limited. There's a really cheap flying club at Flying W. I considered it until I saw their equipment and then I passed. As an ex-pro, you need to pay me to fly that kind of unairworthy crap.

There is also two flying clubs at Lakewood (N12). I don't anything about either of them other than what I've seen online. But both look like they're worth looking into. And if you're near Dix, it might not be that much of a drive for you. I'm just North a Trenton and the hour plus drive was too much for me to even consider it at this point in my life so I never pursued it further.

Besides that, there is also a really attractive partnership deal in a 182 at Northeast Philly that I might consider looking into if my wife ends up not having to move for work next year. You can find it if you search for partnerships on aso.com. Basically it's a $7k buy in and $73/hr for very nicely equipped (430W/coupled autopilot) 182 hangared at KPNE. Seems like a good deal if you're going to be in the area.
