Livin' the Dream

So after about two weeks of 5 hours billed total, I nearly timed out and billed 10 hrs yesterday. To top it off I slept in my car last night because it wasn't worth while driving home for the amount of sleep I was going to get. I know there have been plenty in my shoes but I just want to say I'm living the dream...kind of...not really. That is all.

Fly Safe,

James

Careful, the complain & whine police might come in and give you a violation for complaining about flying for a living.

What time did you end, and start today? How far from base do you live?

There have been a few times when I slept on the couch at my first job because I got in at 2am and was flying again at 6am... the couch spelled like curry :)

But the funny thing was... we WERE living the dream. The school I instructed for gave us instructors free apartments that we shared with other instructors. We would come in in the morning and our boss would be making waffles for us in the lounge or be starting the coffee or scrambling some eggs and we'd all hang out before the day started. We were all a big group that hung out on the weekends, went on XCs together with our students, and generally looked out for one another. If I couldn't make a flight I knew one of my room mates would. Those guys I dorm'd with are the best friends I've ever made and one of them might lead to a great job in D.C. next month.

I'm serious when I say, although I was tired broke and had no life outside of work, I really was living the dream.

It is not all it is cracked up to be, it is a job. As I am sure you may know.

I have a 3 hr commute daily. 1.5 each way. Woke up at 5:30am to be at the airport at 8am and finished my last flight at midnight. Had to do some work in the morning at 8am again so no point in going home for 4:30 of sleep and wasting a lot of money in gas.

James,

Remember this time in 5 years when you are further in your career. This is why you are going to be worth a lot more than they are going to be willing to pay. Keep it up.

This is similar to my story. It humbled me a lot, and taught me its weight in gold.

Relax on what one? When you said you were a future Gojets pilot with a big happy face? Sure, sure, I can relax on that one. :)

Yeah...I really would prefer not to turn this thread into a GoJet thread.

On second thought it has been a while since I have seen a GoJet thread...i kid i kid

I know you don't value my opinion but it only gets worse.
Welcome to the suk.

I never said I didn't value your opinion. In fact I respect it. You have like 5x the experience that I do so I know your not talking out your... I do however differ from your opinion at times but as much as everyone thinks its otherwise it is not personal.

So very true.

I'm with you, I sure as hell wouldn't drive 1.5hrs at midnight just to get some sleep at home. Done one too many late night 3+ hour commutes in my life. No more.
