More Delta furloughs?

It is nothing but a rumor at the time of this post.

Nothing for better or worse will be announced until mid-July anyway, from everything I have read -- and I try to follow this much more closely than most.

I know nothing nor have I heard anything.

There are a couple of guys who hair's on fire on the DALPA boards, but beyond that, nada.

Why is it that so many people want to see me get furloughed? Rumors are running rampant and it just seems to me that folks have some kind of morbid curiosity about whether or not we will hit the street. At some "other" websites people go so far as to wish for our furlough like it is their entertainment. For others it is pure vendetta. A rumor is just that. Pay no attention to it unless you here it from someone with the initials "VP" in front of their name.

I don't think they want to see "you" get furloughed.... though I will agree that it blows to be in the "range" when people make these outrageous claims.

Rumors about losing ones' job sucks....

So being that Delta bought Northwest, if there were a furlough would it be from the combined seniority list? Who has 'newer' pilots? I recall Delta hiring in recent times, but do not remember seeing anything about NWA....

We have one guy on our forums that is nothing but a Debbie downer. All he does is complain and tell everyone else that we are about to furlough. Funny thing is he's only been at out company a year, and seemsto think his brief stints at other regionals holds any weight at ours. Pay no attention to them.

Didn't you have some internet stalker or something that was pining for you to be furloughed or something doofus like that?

But you wouldn't be out of a job. How do you like the E175? :)

Rumors, in general, suck.

Kell,
Good point. But, according to my calculations Delta would have to furlough 950ish for me to still have a captain seat on the E175. If over 1100ish were furloughed then I am SOL and on the street. The skipper I am flying with now heard a rumor (from a furloughed ASA pilot no less. Surreal???) that 2500 would be furloughed this fall. I am typing on a Blaclberry so I can't figure out how to put in the [banghead] emoticon.

Not a stalker per se but, an idiot that appently used to fly the KC135 and now just gets the Colonel's coffee. He has a hard on for Delta in General (pardon the pun).

That would be extreme would it not? 2500 low FO's dont cost the company that much. Seems like buy outs would be a better deal in the LONG run for a company before such a drastic measure.

If DL furloughed 2500 pilots, they would have passed the trigger to convert every single 76 seater back to 70 seats. COnsidering that the last Flt Ops weekly update, (or one of their emails) said we are only slightly overstaffed for next summer and they would carry the extra through the winter, I wouldn't spend too much on this rumor.

It depends on when a furlough happens. If it happens before we achieve our Single Operating Certificate (SOC) with the FAA, then whichever group loses their flying furloughs their own pilots. If it happens post-SOC, then furloughs will be in reverse seniority order on the new combined seniority list. NWA and DAL were both hiring in 2008. The most junior pilots on the new list are former Delta but after maybe 20 pilots the list is a mix of both all the way up.

If they needed to furlough that many, buyouts would almost certainly not be an option.

The company recently offered an early retirement plan aimed primarily at the former NWA 747-200 pilots to help minimize training costs. Supposedly, they hoped for a minimum of 150 pilots to take it. So far, most rumors show from 40 to 80 taking the early retirement, though many will wait until the deadline if they choose to take it. If they needed 2500 people to leave, it would have to be a very attractive (ie. expensive) package. It would be cheaper to furlough.

2500 is a pretty extreme number. That would be about 20% of our pilot group. The costs to furlough that many would be enormous, including changing all 76-seaters back to 70-seaters and furloughing the entire Compass list and training all of their replacements from DAL. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but without a drastic change in the current plan, the airline simply wouldn't function with that kind of staffing reduction.

The numbers floating around on some other sites are in the 150-250 range. I find those much more likely based on my observations(and not just because I would probably keep my job in that situation :))

Just curious, but why would a furloughed ASA pilot know anything about DAL furloughs?

Weeeeell, there's some guys at other airlines that love to lecture me about the inner workings of my union and company, I kind of just roll my eyes and smile for the most part.

I was riding the parking lot bus from the lot to the terminal in PHL a few months ago and an ASA guy was telling me all about how Delta is going to furlough "eight hunnert to a thailsint." I can still hear his thick Philly accent in my head (a couple of my relatives and friends have the same). Anyway he was the most doom and gloom human I think I have ever encountered and I only was talking to him for five minutes. His predicted furlough was to have manifested itself by now.

Maybe it's the same guy! He was quite extreme.

It does seem that there are debby downers at every airline. Unless things are going like gangbusters they are not happy. I don't think that I'm sticking my head in the sand, I just prefer not to sit around talking about a potential furlough.

2500 pilots seems huge even when you consider it's a large group. Wouldn't the writing be on the wall if there was a need to cut such a large number? 150-250 seems like a drop in the bucket...the benefit of trimming 150 would come with the cost of lowered morale and a more militant union.
